Possible to use x61 with the LCD screen removed?

So I have a x61 that I'd like to use with a external LCD exclusively. The included monitor doesn't offer much screen anyway (1024x768), and since I'd rather not get another keyboard, I was thinking about detaching the x61's LCD completely.
Anyone know if this idea will work?

Should work provided you go into BIOS first and make the adjustment to the "Boot Display Device" first.
I did something similar 2 years ago with an R51e. Wow has time gone by that quickly??!!

What should also work is to use the Fn+F7 key combination to cycle between the LCD and external VGA port.

I believe the official term for this is a "halftop". Why don't you look for a docking station though? It will allow you to use the best of both worlds whenever you need it.
PS. With a suitable LVDS driver board you can also go the other way around - use the laptop's LCD assembly as a desktop monitor.

On a similair vein, how big an external monitor can you use. Secondly, what resolution can you go up to.

I like to call it headless

I've been doing it with spare Xs for years. They make great network computing machines, often for single-purpose machines. Got one for file storage, one for downloading, one for hosting VMs, etc.
