X61: Where are all the USB 2.0 ports?

#1 Post by flyingfishfinger » Tue Dec 18, 2012 5:04 pm

Just curious:

- 3 are in regular connectors
- 1 each in the mini PCIe slots

...but hardware readouts indicate 8 USB 2.0 ports. Where are the other 3?

No, that's not it. The docking station has a hub.

My count:

* 3 external ports
* miniPCIe (probably only the WWAN slot)
* Bluetooth
* Fingerprint reader
* SD Card reader
* 1 port to docking station hub

That is 8 by my count.

The X61's SD card reader is a PCI device, not USB.
Otherwise, your count is correct.

After checking the schematics, the 8 available USB ports go to:
Bluetooth
WWAN
Cardbus Controller (not sure why, but there it is. The controller chip is a Ricoh R5C847. Maybe it performs some other tasks as well?)
Fingerprint
USB ports * 3
Dock
X60 tablet 6363-P3U, 3GB ram, 128GB SanDisk Extreme SSD, SXGA+ screen, Intel 6300
T61 Frankenpad in 15 inch T60 body, UXGA LED-lit AFFS LCD, T9300, 6GB RAM, NVidia NVS140m, Intel 6205, 128GB Crucial M4 SSD, 1TB HGST HDD + eBay caddy in Ultrabay
701c butterfly, 75MHz 486DX4, 40MB ram, 1GB CF card

Looks like you are right:
http://www.ricoh.com/LSI/product_pcif/pcc/5c847/

It mentions that it can function as a USB-based ExpressCard controller. It probably allows an ExpressCard passive adapter to function.

So mystery is solved. :)

I always assumed the SD slot was over USB like I've seen it on other systems I owned. Otherwise, I would be able to boot off it :)

Oh well, mystery solved.
