x61 touch XGA to SXGA+ upgrade?
x61 touch XGA to SXGA+ upgrade?
Hello everyone and sorry in advance if this has been answered before.
I want to upgrade my x61 776759u touch XGA to its SXGA+ alternative. Now here is where I got a bit confused. You see I have in the past upgraded a T43 XGA to SXGA+ and a T61p WSXGA+ to WUXGA without the need of messing with the EDID or without having to change the inverter or cable. Now i have looked all over the forum and found this.
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 4&p=684887
It points me to the need of a cable mod, and perhaps even a bios mod as illustrated in the link below.
ithinkpad.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/x6xipsguide/
Now I understand the link above is for ips panels but it implies the steps for the upgrade to be similar and what not.
After more reading I found this screen model in the link below to be the appropriate one for the upgrade.
http://blog.stuffedcow.net/wp-content/u ... 01-101.pdf
Now anything I found on ebay was extremely expensive and I could get a used x210 or x20 for almost that much. So I turned to alibaba and found this;
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/57591 ... 21P01.html
Complete with the touch panel as described by seller. Now i know alibabas reputation but I have the buyer agree on using the escrow system so the money wont be hers until the screen is installed and fully functional.
So it all boils down to can I do a simple screen switch? Or are there a list of steps I must follow before I can call success.
I simply need clarification and any help will be greatly appreciated.
Greetings!

Re: x61 touch XGA to SXGA+ upgrade?
It's probably cheaper (and definitely a heck of a lot easier) to buy a used X61T with SXGA+ panel already in it.
Contact forum member ajkula66 via PM, he has those machines regularly.

cheaper? barebones x61ts are still fetching from 300-400
Wouldn't it be easier to do a screen switch?
Before I order it I just want to see if anyone has tried this before.
Thanks

Re: x61 touch XGA to SXGA+ upgrade?
I swapped successfully a X60T screen into a X61T body. Did this twice. IMO, I got the T601 Frankenpad equivalent from the X60/X61T series. So yes the screens are interchangeable. Instead of dealing with the hassles of worrying about digitizer and LCD panel, I choose the easier route of swapping screen and body. I was fortunate as I had a fantastic deal on the hardware.

Hi,
I just finished doing this mod so here are some tips:
first read this, it will give you most of the information needed:
http://ithinkpad.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/x6xipsguide/
No you will need a conversion cable. The author of the article above occasionally sells them, there is a link to his store on ebay.
If he doesn't have try contacting him. Some people on this forum do sell them too, try to search.
There is also the option with this adapter
http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/228272621.html
but I haven't tried yet,
the cheapest option for a new screen is on aliexpress.com. You can buy either HV121P01-100 or 101. The difference is that in case of
101 the touch layer is glued to the screen and can not be removed, while in case of the 100 is relatively easy.
But you can do better, just buy the screen that doesn't have the touch layer on it. in such case you don't care whether it is 100 or 101.
here is a sample

The rest you can find in the article. Good luck
