what to use to glue new screen to frame on X61 tablet

#1 Post by Utwig » Wed Feb 13, 2013 4:42 am

I received new screen and I'll swap it in following days.

The original screen used some sort of glue which would come out after a few years at the edges. It's not a problem since you can cut it with razor and wipe it but now I'll have to probably wipe all the glue and use something else.

I'd like cleaner solution as well as it not being too thick. For example I used Tessa double sided tape to glue licence plate on my car and I think something like that would be too thick for the space between screen and laptop frame.

What does the collective mind recommend.

The glue you're talking about is actually an adhesive that fills the entire space between the glass writing surface and the LCD panel. When it leaks out, there are often air bubbles left behind which can be an ugly sight if it's on the display area of the screen. Consider yourself very lucky if your old screen did not develop bubbles like that.

Trying to remove the adhesive (and separating the writing surface and LCD panel) usually results in a cracked panel.

I believe that Utwig is referring to that horror-goop that holds the bezel to the screen...

My line of thinking would be a thin double-sided tape.

If I'm not understanding the issue at hand correctly, please feel free to set me straight.

It is a double-sided tape and I've used 3M one with success (the thin type).

The OP did talk about it "coming out at the edges", and I would rather hope that double-sided tape does not flow out of the edge of my screen.

The X61 tablets at least used a leaking goop to hold the bezel as well. I suppose it could have been tape at one point since I know adhesive on, for example, masking tape will ooze if heated, but it looked more like glue.

Personally I just removed all of it and the screws and clips do just fine at holding the bezel. Plus, it makes it a lot easier to open up again if you should ever have to do so.
