X61s immediately shuts down when power cord is removed

I have a newish battery in this laptop, and it is deemed "good" by the power program, and 100% charged, but when I pull out the AC cord, it goes black immediately. Happens every time, so I can only use the laptop now with power cord in. It is ~6 years old, but except for the heating up issue that it has always had, works well. Please help? I am not experienced with anything in it that requires unscrewing the back.

Welcome to thinkpads.com, we're glad you're here, but too bad it's because of problems.

Most obvious would be that the battery has failed despite what BMM reports. Can you start, and run the laptop without the AC adapter, and only the 100% charged battery?

No, it is unresponsive afterward, unless power cord is plugged in. Battery is 5 cycled, bought Nov 2012, and when I tried to run the discharge program, it didn't seem to be discharging after three hours. I'm very worried that the power is not being handed off to battery when cord is pulled :( I hope you are right that the battery crashed, but it didn't give any indication. Does this sound like something that I can fix with upgrade? I did the think pad update program and there were no new drivers related to power management, but I did all the critical ones.

Well, there must have been something in that update, because it is now running on the battery again! I wonder, though, if heat had something to do with this? In any case, thanks for the forum. I am sure I will be back, and maybe someone else can profit from what I did in this situration....
