X61 Fan Noise

There is problem with my wife's X61 which is making a terrible noise.

It is not that the fan is merely loud, but it is making an abnormal sound a bit like a high frequency click.

Cooling nevertheless remains good, so the overall heat exchanger functionality must be working.

Is there a fix for this maybe involving a strategically placed squirt of oil?

Or will be need a replacement, and if so can anybody point me in the right direction?

Many thanks!

Check that the fan itself is not barely "nicking" against a wire or something like that. You could try disassembling the fan unit and oiling the shaft/bearing. Beyond that, if it's not hitting on something, I would replace the fan.

I opened it up and blew the fan out with my trusty rocket blower, but there was a wire running very close to the fan unit which I relocated more firmly and the noise is now gone completely.

Thanks a lot for your help!
