That thread translates to "Please let there be a modified X61 BIOS with QX9300 support soon"

I'm currently working on P8800 on X61, after successfully installed T9900 on T61

Just a reminder, it's possible to put a T9900 on X61, Leokim has already succeeded with P8800
But it'll make your X61 even hotter than a MBA-----bad for thinkpad's reputation
T9900 reaches nearly 90 degrees on my T61 under intel burn test

And QX9300 on X61 (even if it's possible) might make you arrested for attempting fireraising

X61 BIOS modding question:

Is there a way to give the X61 lower minimum Vcore through BIOS modding?

The VCore setting on my X61 T8100 only goes down to 0.95v, yet I see undervolted T61's with the same CPU go down to .9125v. What gives?

The minimum voltage depends on individual CPU, it's not modified in the BIOS

I've seen L7500 goes down to 0.900v, 0.825v, or 0.950v
however you can undervolt the CPU further via a pin mod (more information on NBR) (reduce voltage by 0.1V by shortcicuiting VID[3] and VCC)

I know that, but that's not the point.

The X61 simply won't let me set a Vcore lower than 0.95v.
I've tried RMClock, no setting below 0.95v.
I'm using IBM_ECW now, but even if I force it to 0.925v via the config menu, the readout's still 0.95v

0.95v is the default Vcore for the lowest multiplier, and there are no available VCore settings below that. My X61 C2D T8100 is set to 0.95v for all but the two highest multipliers.

I know it can go lower, but there's a limiter somewhere inside the X61. It's something like "the CPU reports its VIDs, and the system will only allow VIDs within that range".

That's why I think it could be a BIOS limit. On the other hand, maybe it's simply a result of the design of the CPU VRM circuits used in the X61.

however you can undervolt the CPU further via a pin mod

Pinmodding a CPU that isn't mounted on a socket is not for the weak of heart, or those with shaky hands.

but aren't the CPU's on the X6x series soldered to the motherboard? I was under the impression they were.

Yes, they are soldered.

In this case, pinmodding is impossible without a BGA rework station. (I don't have one).
And even with a BGA station, it's much too risky.

That's why I said it's not for the weak of heart, and why I was wondering if it's possible to unlock the lower VCore values through a BIOS mod.

They may be soldered, but the pins are still arranged in a way where other similar socket CPUs will work if you have the right equipment.

Putting a QX9300, let alone any Core 2 Quad Mobile in an X61 is quite possibly the most ridiculous, crazy, absurd, and bonkers thing I've ever seen anyone look to try.

I want one.

It would be fast, but probably run pretty hot also. I would be happy with a 2.4 gigahert CPU. Mine is a 1.6 model.

X61s' cooling can handle T8300, someone on 51NB has even tried with T9500

there are definitely points/resistors/diodes/capacitors connected to CPU pins directly on X61 motherboard, for example, on T61 the BSEL[1] is directly connected to R1025, which makes 1066FSB CPU possible without a CPU socket pin mod (in theory).

And trust me, BIOS mod is even harder than PIN mod. It is possible to find X61 datasheet and circuit diagram on internet, BUT you can hardly find any tutorials for BIOS modification

There are T9300 equipped X61's from the factory also, so they can cope with the heat.

Sounds like crazy. Desolder bga CPU. Take qx9300. Cut all pins (Intel state that qx9300 was only PGA), solder balls. And solder new cpu to MB.

Hello RMSMajestic. How are you doing. I have find this thread searching for quadcore answers. But i havent seen original 51nb thread (and i can't read chinese). May be you have find some threads for T61 | T500 & quadcores on 51nb?

Hello RMSMajestic. How are you doing. I have find this thread searching for quadcore answers. But i havent seen original 51nb thread (and i can't read chinese). May be you have find some threads for T61 | T500 & quadcores on 51nb?

No one has ever succeeded unfortunately

I've been searching for ages and still, only found QX9300 running 2 cores on HP HDX9000 (equivalent to X9100)
*sigh*
Won't have time for those crazy matters until the end of next year, tons of essays, exams & courseworks T^T

Are you trying to cut down on your heating bill?

I would think you'd have to modify the frame to accomidate a bigger fan.
If only you can cut part of the battery and slap a T6x fan onto it.

Someone on 51nb has succeeded with P8800 on X61. The BIOS is there and you just need to modify R112

BGA will be tricky cos one needs 0.889mm solder balls
And, please, forget about QX9300 on X61. Even T61 can't cope with the heat

This could be the "Ultimate X61", as it's a bit faster than the T9300 while having a lower TDP, so it runs cooler as well.

Though I think the hybrid cooling idea can be useful in a stock X61, especially when docked to the Ultrabase where there's a guaranteed increase in internal temperature.

TBH I found X61's ultrabase relatively useless..... 3 USBs is enough for normal use and there's hardly any need for CD drive. I have only used the X6x ultrabase once since I got it.....unlike 2503 ultrabase which I frequently use :/

Its main advantage (as with most docks) is that you don't need to plug in a bunch of cables when moving your laptop between home and work for example. Also X6 ultrabase has an RS232 port for those than can't use a USB-RS232 converter.

I've only used RS232 once in my life lol
BTW, the X62 will be based on ULV Haswell (not really a good thing as you have higher full load power consumption and lose the chance for installing windows XP)
I'll just stick with my T63p
