No sound - x60 & windows 7

#1 Post by bigolac » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:16 pm

Hello - found this site with a simple google search and have a question.

I recently acquired an x60 with Windows 7 installed - however, there is no sound. A search at the Lenovo site said there's no audio drivers for windows 7.

Is there a work around and if so, what?

Love the form factor - would love it even more with sound.... ;)

TIA - Adam

Welcome to the Forum, Adam!

I think that you should have sound under Windows 7 using built-in drivers that come with Windows. Before looking further into drivers, can you check a couple simple things?:

1. Check that you haven't inadvertently muted your sound, or turned it down so low that you can't hear it.
You can check that your sound is working by using the round, physical sound buttons in the upper-left area on your keyboard. You should get an on-screen display showing your volume moving up or down or showing the speaker symbol with the slash being added (when you mute) or removed (when you unmute).

2. Check if the sound is coming through the headphone jack.
Simply plug in some headphones to your Thinkpad and see if you get sound that way. Maybe your speakers are broken/disconnected/whatever.

3. Check the "Device Manager" and see if there are any problems listed with red x's or exclamation marks.
That might indicate a problem with the driver installation.

The X60 was never sold with Win 7 installed by Lenovo, so that is why you don't see Win 7 specific drivers. But for the most part, Win 7 has built-in drivers that should work with almost everything you could need. And if you run Windows Update and Thinkpad System Updates, then they should find updates to most drivers. I would be surprised if sound doesn't work out-of-the-box with a standard Win 7 install, but maybe I'm wrong: I'm using X61T's these days instead of X60T's, and there may be slight differences in hardware.

Thanks for the quick response - it's appreciated. Unfortunately, I traced the problem to a bad speaker - specifically, the wires are bad for some reason.

I'm off to find a replacement on the bay or elsewhere...

Thanks for the help!
