CPU temperature

#1 Post by Temetka » Wed Oct 23, 2013 1:30 am

My CPU is an L7500 and I am running at around 60 degrees Celsius. Is this temp ok? I do have some Arctic Silver 5, but haven't installed it yet. I am using tpfancontrol. Thanks in advance.

Is it idle or low or full load temperature reading? How quiet have you set your fan?
Mine T8100 powered X61 hits ~70-75*C under high load (dual IDA enabled, standard voltage, BIOS is controlling fan).

Its sorta high, 50C in idle/low load is more normal if judging by most other laptops......

Its within spec for the CPU, what i would be more concerned about is that some other components (chipset, which may share the heatpipe with the CPU for example) may be at around this temperature too or exceed it somewhat, and BGA chips going near 70-80C are where failures occur - Not the chips burn out but soldering joints under them fail from thermal expansion/contraction cycles

Does this temperature happen when the fan is working and at high speed ?

If yes, the fan is trying its best and still does not get effect, so check for dirt accumulation clogging the heatsink (its on the inner side of the heatsink where the fan blows at it), and for dried up thermal compound

If no, looks like computer does not assume that more cooling is necessary and does not run the fan much, this can be set in the fan control. Other than that, still its good to open and check up on dirt and thermal compound condition - even if it still cools sufficiently, keeping it up will make the fan work more efficiently, have to run for shorter periods, so make the fan last longer and use less battery

It seems to be idling at 60 degrees. I will open it tomorrow and install a new layer of As 5 and blow it out to see if it helps. I already have the HMM For this Machine.

It is much too high then. Mine idles below 40*C for example now I am reading 38.2*C using RMClock.

Well now it's idling at 49 degrees celcius. I didn't get a chance to open it up and install the AS5. I probably won't be able to until this weekend.

Oh.

My.

God.

What a pain in the [censored]. It has taken me an hour to remove the fan assembly and I followed the HMM step by step. Checking and double checking everything. It get's to a point in the dis-assembly that you have to forge on, instead of slapping it all back together. I reached that point at the mini PCIe cards. One of the screws was tightened in so badly, I had to drill it out. Thankfully it only took about 4 seconds (literally) with my drill gun to remove it.

So now I have to clean the CPU and fan assembly. The old thermal paste is dry on the fan and barely tacky on the CPU, so it was time to be replaced.

I have worked on hundreds of laptops. None of them, ever, have challenged me this badly. Talk about an exercise in patience.

So I am going to have a smoke, then clean the CPU and HSF, apply a fresh shiny coat of AS5 and put it all back together.

Had I known what was in store before hand I would have done this on my bench at work instead of at home in the living room.

That being said, I am glad I will be completing it soon. None of my other planned mods or anything will require me to pull the system board.

I did release a clip from the PC card cage, gotta figure out how that goes back in. But I can do that after I re-apply the AS5 and the get the planar board re-installed and stable in it's mounts.

LOL, yep the X6x series are wonderful machines but not the easiest thing to reapply thermal paste. You have to strip literally everything apart.

All reassembled.

I will have to source a new pc card cage. The eject mechanism was damaged somehow.

Idling at 52 degrees celcius. Knowing AS5, I will see the true temp in a few weeks.

Gonna put her through the paces at work today.

I think I know how you feel after replacing my T41 hinge last week. I work on laptops somewhat regularly. But that was the most intense takeapart I can ever remember. Let's just say I've bonded with my machine. Haha

I think removing the heatsink assembly and motherboard were about the only things left that I didn't have to do.
