Search function yielded no relevant information AFAIK, so I apologize if there is.

I am in an opportunity to purchase a malfunctioning x61t with a properly working display unit.

Given that I remove the protective cover and goop underneath, use the modified cable for SXGA resolution and run middleton bios with SXGA support - Would I be able to drive an X61t SXGA+ screen inside of my X61? I understand there are direct replacements, but they are a bit pricey and given this X61 is my work machine, I'm not willing to invest that much into it at the moment.

Sure feels like this XGA screen is my repentance for my lack of appreciation for SXGA resolution over the years.

Yes, it's possible. The improved resolution makes an X61 still worth using, IMO, though extra memory and replacement batteries are getting quite expensive.
But... removing the glue is a horrible job and success is not guaranteed. You might end up with a broken screen or a working but-not-quite-perfect one. It's an adventure though...
