I'd like to give the X60/s (X60s laptop assembled with X60 screen) a touchscreen upgrade

Any thoughts ? What kind of touch window is it - for use with stylus ? With finger ? Is this window any good ?

How about fitting the cable between the screen assembly and computer ?

My thought is to turn the 4-wire PVC isolated cable (extension) to a round cable and get it through the screen hinge. Place the controller in the laptop itself and connect to internal USB instead of fingerprint reader. Possible ?

The hinge is pretty tight as it is, and there is a wifi antena wire going through each hinge. I thought of rerouting the antenna wires to go both through the right hinge, then the left will be free for the touch window data cable. Problem with this is that the antenna wire is then too short to reach to the wifi card inside the computer. Is there any wifi antenna wire extender available ? just few inches to reach to the wifi card, with the appropriate tiny coax connector on each end so that i can connect it between the original antenna cable and wfi card ? And how much would such extension affect wifi reception ?

From the description, it looks like a resistive type screen, meaning it works with stylus and finger input.
Though I have doubts that it can be installed inside the X60.

The lid is cramped as it is, so installing the touchscreen might be difficult.
Also, I can't think of a place (aside from the PC Card cage) where you can fit the controller board.

I planned on installing the controller in the bottom of the computer, under the board (between the board and bottom housing) or under the palmrest on the right side

But im consideriung to abandon the project for this reason : I like the dark and reliably readable in any light conditions LCD a it is, and i can imagine that it will become way less readable with the glossy touch panel over it. This offsets by far the benefits of the touch screen.....

So it'll remain just a normal X60/X60s



Final update :

The computer was assembled and started its new life as a normal X60, without touchscreen

from my experience the position of the screen is such that is comes pretty close to the keyboard when closed. Sometimes you can even notice the round mark of the trackpoint rubber on the screen when opening the laptop. So my guess is that even if you manage to place the touch panel in front of the screen it will be impossible to close the laptop.
Nevertheless, some models are equipped with so called ultralight screens which are thinner then the usual screens. In these models there are spacer rubbers placed between the screen and the back cover. Thickness of these spacers is about 1-2 mm. So in case you manage to push the screen back towards the cover by removing the spacers you might theoretically be able to put the touch layer in front of it. But you should remember that it might be not an easy modification to do specially considering the positioning of the inverter board and the controller board which is at the back of the lcd panel (on ultralight models the panel is at the bottom of the lcd).

If you really want to improve the experience on your laptop I'd suggest to do the sxga+ upgrade. I have done it with mine and I enjoy the machine like no other. Having a high-res 4x3 small machine is a total pleasure.
