Smallest/thinnest power brick for X61?

#1 Post by atanasoff » Fri Dec 13, 2013 9:16 pm

I have an X61 with a chunky power brick. Old 16v bricks I have around appear incompatible - different connector and voltage. I'd rather avoid 2nd tier power supplies, while it's a simple part, the OEM stuff never fails while the cheap ones may.

What's the smallest, thinnest thing I can power this machine with? It would be nice if it can run off a 12v DC airline socket, but not essential. It need not supply enough watts to simultaneously run the machine at max possible power consumption and charge the battery; I'll never need 90 watts.

I would be pleasant if it could be used for Thinkpads of various vintage, adjusting the voltage somehow. If it can't do that, then having a USB power port would be handy. The main thing is that it be compact, abuse resistant and reliable.

I charged my x61 with a power brick that had gotten from a used SL400c.
It looked just like a T/X61 power brick but just slightly smaller, but I think it had gotten too hot and stopped charging the second time I used it.
I was charging it on my bed and I wasn't sure if I had knocked the cord loose or it overheated b/c the ThinkPad stopped charging.

These 90W Ultraslim AC/DC Combo Adapters have all the adapters for car/plane/travel that you may want, as well as 16V/19V/20V powertips for different models.
And the size is really small.

If that's too complicated, for daily use the 65W/20V adapter is the smallest:

90W Ultraslim
Perfect. 5/8", and 1 gadget replaces 3.

A quick note about size and thinness. I have both the Ultraslim Combo Adapter and the compact 65-watt OEM adapter that shipped with the X61 series. While the Ultraslim Combo Adapter is definitely thinner, it is not really smaller in overall volume. By the time you include all the cords plus the bulky connector pieces, you end up with something that I think takes up probably more space than the simple 65-watt original. I still tend to take the Ultraslim adapter with me when I go out, and I like to use the additional splitter to power my cellphone at the same time as my laptop, but I just want to make sure you don't expect the Ultraslim to be much (or any) improvement in size (by volume) over the 65-watt original.

I may have to try several and toss/sell/give away what I don't use. At the moment I have a huge 90 watt 20v brick, looks like something you would charge a motorcycle battery with. If there's a deck-of-cards sized power brick out there I might break my no off brand rule and try it.

Specifications for the ultraslim adapter say it's 400 g plus all cables. I've two 65 W adapters and the heavier is still only 240 g plus clover leaf cable. Not really sure the ultraslim is a saver versus the current standard 65 W.
