Replace x61 cover?

Is it possible to replace the x61 cover/lid? I purchased my x61 on eBay and there's quite a few scratches on the external lid. I see a few of them on eBay but I notice no screws or visible way to remove the existing one. If it's a bit of a hairy process then I won't take the chance of messing things up for a cosmetic problem! Thanks!

Yes, it's possible but not the easiest of switch. Have a look at the maitenance manual first to see what is involve. Might be easier to just replace the whole screen assembly.

To detach the lid, you first have to remove:

1. battery
2. keyboard
3. palmrest assembly
4. antenna cables
5. LCD flex cable

Then remove the four screws that hold the lid to the base and lift it out, taking care not to damage the LCD flex cable, especially the lid sensor.

After that, you still have to:

1. Separate the bezel from the lid
2. remove the LCD panel and hinges

IMO, it's quite a bit of work to fix a cosmetic problem.
Whether you'll go for it or not depends entirely on how much you value your Thinkpad's appearance. :D

I actually meant to ask about manuals as well..are there any other ones besides the maintenance manual? I'm hoping for pdf files as I didn't get any kind of documentation with the thinkpad. As for the lid well I think I'll leave it scratched and working rather than clean and irredeemably disassembled.

The maintenance manuals are in PDF format. Have you check it out on Lenovo's site yet? The documentation you get with a new laptop is at best only good for starting a fire.

Ah you make me laugh.
Some OEM instruction manuals/documents become worthwhile to collectors mainly because they are thrown away.
I am guilty of this.

Anyways, may I suggest you wrap your X61?
Here's a photo of an X61s' palmrest.
A scratch isn't bad at all.
I removed a sticker on an older ThinkPad and it took out the paint to the bare plastic/possible metal!
It looks ridiculous now... but better than that random sticker on it before. 8)
