USB 3.0 for x61 tablet (and other models?)

#1 Post by thinkpadrobert » Sun Mar 16, 2014 1:30 am

There are some mini pcie to usb 3 cards available out there. I wonder if these would work the space WWAN slot on an x61 tablet. Any thoughts?

E.g. http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/ ... CI+Express

I believe they should work. Wiring the connectors out somewhere without having to keep the laptop permanently open is another story.

There was an earlier thread about adding USB 3.0 on the X61 series: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=109002

I suggested this particular card: http://www.commell.com.tw/Product/Perip ... X-7202.HTM

Manual here: http://www.commell.com.tw/Download/Manu ... al_v11.pdf
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E

Yeah... they work. My friend modded a small LCD into the palmrest where he can have a Linux console open, and it's connected via a small USB interface to a mini PCIe card plugged into the WWAN slot.

It may require Middleton's BIOS... but give it a try.

Thanks everyone - I think I'll have a go at this. The connectors will definitely be a problem, but not insurmountable.

That sounds very interesting. Is there a writeup somewhere?

I'll have to ask my friend to give me something... or post instructions somewhere. He's a student at Merced, not with me at Chico, and he's still learning programming... so I'd have to see what he can do.
