It is still possible to solder on a P8800 for example. Some guy over at nb51 did this if I remember correctly. Needles to say it's anything but easy to do so.

A re-balling station comes to mind...
There's a shop which deals with this type of upgrades on ToughBooks, not sure if they would play with a ThinkPad...can get you a link if you want...but sometime much later today.
