x61 as torrent server

#1 Post by aldimeola81 » Wed Jul 09, 2014 7:36 am

I have several thinkpad working at home I do not use, so I chose the most 'small and economical in terms of energy and I have created a small server.

the OS is linux ubuntu 12.4.4

the computer is an x61

I can completely manage externally through my smartphone.

for now use it to download torrents, and as nas-sharing, the disc is a ssd, middletown bios.

remote administration from webmin I can, but for the torrent server is already 'included in trasmission.

I always keep it on and closed, it consumes almost nothing (less than 10W) and I'm happy.

maybe someone can 'like the idea

That would be lots of fun.
I have an extra X61s and X61T bottom ends that I would like to utilize someday.
I thought about using one as an XMBC machine connected to my TV, as my PS3 runs pretty loud and possibly takes too much juice.
I would need that one broadcom PCIe card to watch videos flawlessly.
I'd run it bare, only the keyboard attached, overheating wouldn't be a problem.

Or the other thought was similar to yours, use it as a server, maybe control it on my phone.
I wouldn't know how yet, but I figure there is a way to do so.
I do have an external harddrive, so I could possibly upload photos or school/work documents with a proper connection with it connected.
It would definitely save space on my phone when it comes to photos and music.
But I don't really have much of a purpose of it yet, hardly have any photos uploaded onto dropbox or any server, most of the photos I have are uploaded to Imgur anyways.

Anyways, I like the idea. You could torrent while away and come home to it with the download completed, ready to serve you. :thumbs-UP:

it is very useful.

when I have a little 'time to occupy, I connect and put something to download.

I forgot to mention that the x61 is also used as a media center connected to a monitor where I can watch movies in the evening.

after the fan mod I must say that, from the noise it produces is difficult to understand if it is the thinkpad is on or off.
