X6x Series Heatsinks
X6x Series Heatsinks
I'd like to install the best heatsink/fan (HSF) assembly into my X61s and have torn it down
completely. The assembly looks quite small ( FRU 42X3804) and based on these posts I believe
that the larger fan from the X61 will not fit:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... an#p738547
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... an#p738745
My first question is if the bases for the X61s and X61T are the same dimensions so that
whatever is required for the T is also required for the s to use the larger HSF assembly? I've seen
mention of case mods that allow the larger HSF to fit into a T, can I assume those will also work on
an S? Anyone know or have a picture of what those mods are?
I might just buy an X61 for the larger case and fan rather than hack up this s type.
Is it true that all the motherboards fit dimensions wise between the X6X, T and S types? I understand
that a standard voltage processor would probably not cool properly in the slim chassis.
HSF part numbers that work and are the best would help if anyone has them handy.

Re: X6x Series Heatsinks
I replaced my X61s base cover with the X61 part to fit the larger fan. The X61 fan will not fit directly into an X61s.

Here is my solution:

I took a heatpipe from a not working fan and attached it using permanent heat grase.
It has improved the heat level a bit. I haven't done detailed comparison though.

Re: X6x Series Heatsinks
Thanks people, I'll probably just buy the bigger one and see what it takes to
make it fit or else use the X61 bottom.
I'm also shopping for a t8300 motherboard so perhaps I should just switch
to the X61.
