X61T: 4G ram, windows 7 ultimate
I simple love the keyboard and screen ratio.


It is kinda slow, using crucial M4, samsung 830 etc.

until. I put in a Samsung 840 evo 250GB


It is sizzling fast now. look at the write Seq speed for example


and, I do not have middleton bios, since my X61T has touch, I am not sure if middletown's version supports it. (Would appreaciate if someone with experience can tell me )


AS SSD result:

Read Seq 208mb/s
write Seq 680mb/s0m

read 4k: 39MB/s
Write 4k: 62mb/s

read 4k-64Thrd: 168mb/s
Write 4k: 154 mb/s

acc time: read 0.175ms, write 0.066

These results don't make sense on a SATA1 system (you say you don't have Middleton BIOS which unlocks SATA2 speeds), unless you are using SSD caching (like Samsung's RAPID software, or Primocache). If so, they are somewhat logical, although the huge read/write difference is a bit strange.

Benchmarks aside, I am also skeptical that it's possible to actually feel the difference in system responsiveness between the Evo and the older SSDs you mentioned. So not sure what's going on there...

No, it isn't. Of course there is also a tendency to call anything that is not liked here "POS", no matter if it's true or not. There are very few hardware pieces that actually justify the name "POS".

The Evo 840 is a good bang for the buck: it is competitively priced, and gives good performance, for the price. There are faster SSDs, and SSDs with fewer bugs, but you get what you pay for.

I have X61T with finger touch and it good working with Middleton's BIOS. I use Intel 320 SSD in it and it is working well.
May be other drives that OP used before have not been TRIMmed or secure erased before installation?

I appreciate Samsung because they the use their own design and their own parts to make SSDs. Like old Intel's they not mixing others parts (designing products) and participate on market with pricing and advertising. They are developing and producing.things. Some thing are better and some are worse but they working on it.
I have 840 (non Pro) in X61. I know that TLC have weared faster but now it works well.

From one of the smaller peanuts in the gallery: The fact that Richardumn has only made this one post is suspicious, so I agree with RBS. (Although I have switched to Heineken recently myself...)

But the comments which it drew from those trusted members who are running or who are otherwise familiar with Samsung SSD's are quite valuable.

I've noticed that a lot of people on this forum really like very old, very slow SSD's that perform horribly compared to something modern, so I can see why some people might be upset when someone says that their new SSD is faster than an ancient Intel 310 or something of the sort.

I don't consider a M4 or 830 to be slow or old. Actually I like both and in the right machine flies as fast as my newer SSDs. I do have some old and slow SSDs for Thinkpads limited to SATA I or SATA II speeds.

When someone with a SATA I x61T claims:

it has nothing to do with old or modern. It is simply not possible.

Next he will tell us his new car can break the speed of light on a nice straight autobahn.
