X60 HDD > SSD and RAM type?

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to replace the HDD of a Lenovo X60 with and SSD I hear the Intel MX25X is the one to choose but the UK doesn't have any in stock and the RAM must be DDR2 SDRAM?

Can I use any 2.5" SSD to replace the 80gb (crappy stock HDD) and add an additional 2GB to my stock 1Gb SDRAM?

Yes to both.

Depending on what size/price range SSD you're looking for Crucial MX100 and SanDisk Extreme Pro would be my recommendations in the entry-level and top performance ranges.

I'm in the UK and have an X60s and X61s and I have installed a Intel SSD in the latter, but if I ever put Windows 7 on the other I will get an SSD for that. If you are considering using Windows XP, you need to install additional software to handle TRIM and alignment stuff.

I used a Ultrabay caddy to put the old IDE ATA drive in and this method seems to work best, for when you are cloning your Windows O/S to the new SSD. I also use the excellent Paragon Migrate OS to SSD software which handles all the TRIM and alignment things during the cloning process. It handles everything from Win XP onwards.

Some Chinese caddy clones do not fit 100% perfectly so I hear; mine seems to be a genuine Lenovo one and it fits the X60 range and many others. Ebay item number: 321671873095


I bought the Intel X25-M 2.5" 160GB (SSDSA2M160G2GC) in November 2013 for £70 but I think it is around the £50 to £60 range these days. Works very nicely although in hindsight I may have been better off with a Crucial drive, because they seem to perform much faster for disk writes. I went with Intel for their reliability but Crucial might be ok too.

As you are probably already aware, 3GB of RAM is the absolute maximum for your X60; that is all the chipset can address.
