I'm in for a couple X62s, and X202 sounds great. Tablet version of X61 or X200 would be a bonus.

Heck, I'd be in for 10 ;-) Because I'd certainly break a few experimenting....

Are the ECU and BIOS firmware open? This is especially interesting to me if I have a shot at hacking in tablet support.
Did I read right that there's no second battery support? That would be a pity--- that empty drive bay is crying out for about 3000mAH.

I'm glad to finally see pics of the USB/audio daughterboard, I was worried I'd have to cons one up. ;-)

Who is going to be our resident supplier? I'd preorder now.

One would be quite enough for me, i'd rather be careful haha. I might work for a printing company, but i don't think the bosses would be fine with us printing money on our off hours. :D

I'm definitely interested in a couple, especially if the bios is open source (eg coreboot based).

I was kidding about ten, but I'd commit to at least two, probably four.

the bios is based AMI,aptioV,and you can use the ambcp V5.0 to open it.

So... "no". It's somewhat customizable using AMI's config tool, but there is no source.
Perhaps there's enough information to add independent Coreboot support given the AMI lineage, but I don't know.
[And please correct me if I'm wrong on any part of the above.]

I also wanted to ask about detailed schematics and board layout files--- this is a DIY project after all. I don't want to downplay what an impressive achievement these boards are, and it would be a shame to not have enough information to further mod/customize the hardware too. I'm much much more interested in all this if there's a chance to add an internal second battery and restore tablet functionality, etc, etc, as the modding community comes up with new ideas. In my mind, the X62 boards are a tantalizing starting point (well, middle-point :-), not a self-contained finished project.

Cool news!
Thank you - you are doing great job!

We are all dreaming about X62 there - but how many boards you are planning to build?
And is there any way to get one to the Russia?

And ofcourse i am waiting for X202 and especially T70. T601 FP is my lovely Thinkpad and completely new mainboard is the last thing it waiting for to live forever.

What a week.

I replaced the battery and fan on my beloved X61 for the nth time (runs a 1TB hybrid SSD/HDD).

And now this!

HOPE, Please put me down for an X62 conversion kit, and tell me how to pay.
If delivery to the UK is a problem, I will be in Hong Kong at the end of April, and could come by Shenzen to collect...

I have been looking into a smaller laptop than my 14" T61F

Since im a student, i need something that is:

Smaller (the tables in the auditoriums are really small)
Have longer batterylife (I dont always have access to power)
Weigth less (im biking around 15km a day, and every kg counts!)
Have a keyboard (and thats why my TP8 is not enough)

And the X62 seems to fit that just fine!
Thinkpad W500 (2.53 GHz P8700, 4 GB RAM, FireGL V5700, WUXGA)
Thinkpad T61F 14" (2.53 GHz QX9300, 6 GB RAM, Quadro FX570m 256 MB, SXGA). Advanced dock with AMD Radeon HD7750
Custom build ITX desktop (i5 4590, 8GB RAM, AMD R7 260X, custom watercooling)
Thinkpad 8, Fujitsu F-07C

A question...

how much is this screen and where can you get it from?

SXGA+ IPS/AFFS with resolution 1400 x 1050

i assume it just screws into the frame and plugs into the board

I think it needs a different lcd cable as well. But its a moot point since the LCD is practically impossible to find. At least in good nick.

That SXGA+ mod has a surprisingly long history on these and other forums, based on the research I've been doing. I just got an X60 in pretty good shape to prepare for the X62, assuming they sell to the U.S. I don't know if I'll go through with it all though...sourcing a good display for my T601F was hard enough, and that was with having help from someone on these forums both able and willing to do the LCD LED mod for me. So I didn't even need to worry much about installation.

The X62 sounds great and I still enjoy my X61 and intend to keep it going well into the future.

But at this stage I won't be getting the X62 motherboard but maybe down the track who knows. The main reasons behind my decision are -

1. The motherboard will cost $600 AUD which needs careful thought before transacting.

2. My X61 only has a XGA screen and it is not too bad in the 12 inch 4 x 3 format but I would want a screen upgrade if I am going to use it more regularly or as a "Daily Driver".

I have just purchased a Micron C4 256 GB SSD second hand for $80 AUD which should put some more legs into the X61. I will keep a close interest in how the X62 project pans out though and it is a great project but just not for me at this time.

If they decide to do a motherboard + CPU for the X301, I would love to buy one.

I am in the process of trimming down my laptop collection to just my Surface Pro 2 and my X301. After serious thinking and consideration, those are the 2 machines I love the most out of my stack.

What great news!

@ hopejyb

as you are going to upgrade the X20x, T6x and maybe the X30x too I've come to an idea.

Lots of us would like to see a better panel inside their e.g. X301. There is none for the LVDS display interface.

Would't it be great if you'd give people the option to choose between a modern (eDP) and an old (LVDS) display interface, so that people could upgrade to a modern panel or stick with their old one?

There is an AFFS display with LVDS which I use in my X301, but it requires extensive modding. I too would be happy about a modern mainboard with eDP, allowing something like the MacBook Retina Display to be used plug and play.

I think I've followed your three takes to mod the display on your X301 in another forum. I thought you didn't make it work!?

Either way, it'd make much sense to update the panels for some TPs, like the X201, X301 and the T61 14,1'' wide too.

They all are great machines (with a modern mobo even greater) with one thing in common: lousy displays.

Agreed. The 14" wide machines will be tricky though as there aren't any modern 14" 16:10 screens around that would be suitable.

To find an exactly fitting panel will be tricky, so I'll be willing to take some disadvantage.

The B140QAN01.1 fits, but has a slightly different aspect ratio.

I could live with that. In UHD :D
