From hibernate, backlight on, then out

Software bug on an X61 tablet running Windows 7.
Restoring from hibernate, sometimes, always after the "Close Encounters" logo assembles, the backlight goes out. The machine responds to a fingerprint logon, and appears to be operating normally otherwise.
This is a software bug. The BIOS splash screen and Windows logo always appears before the backlight goes out. Toggling the internal/external display has no effect. I associate it with having tethered a Samsung phone prior to hibernation.
I have not hooked up an external display, but it's definitely not a hardware problem.
Has anyone found a workaround?
