Will a X61s L7300 work with a T8300 or T7700 without punishing the MOBO

#1 Post by Vonfeffer » Mon Jun 22, 2015 9:56 pm

Hi, I have the X61s L7300 with SSD and the two pipeline copper heatsink installed. I would like to know if it works with the T8300 or T7700 processor without pushing the motherboard eletronics too far and if it the heat would be too much. Does anyone has tryed this, or have this info.?

Thanks

The short answer to your question would be "it simply can't be done".

The longer version goes along these lines:

a) Your CPU is soldered to the board and not swappable unless you're in possession of re-balling equipment and know how to use it.

b) The planars in "s" and tablet version of X6* series only support low-voltage CPUs.

There's an overclocking thread in this forum where the OP discovered that the X61s only has half the voltage regulation circuitry compared to the X61; this means X61s has a lower maximum current output, which is understandable since it was designed to handle low-voltage CPUs.

Answer to your questions (I'm perhaps the only one on this forum who's able to answer questions like this :P):

P8700: Yes, tested.
T8100: highly likely.
T8300: possibly.
T7700: NO.

P.S. I doubt my answer is useful, as 1. the CPU on X61s is soldered onto motherboard 2. Even though a P8700 works and pass prime 95 tests, it should be installed on a two phase mobo

Thanks for the info, but I do have a soldering station. I know the processor is soldered. I didn't know the s variation was underpowered... so I'm just looking for my options, because 1.4Ghz is too slow... What processor could I use to run it at 2.4 or at least 2.0? Or should I just buy a x61 MOBO, wuold it work with the display of the x61s?

Thanks

PS: Penryn version would work with it? (Middleton BIOS installed).
PPS: I like the t8100 option!!!

Unless you have a BGA rework station, replacing the processor is not a good idea.

An X61 board is the same size and shape as an X61s, but it won't fit because the X61 heatsink is too tall. Some have attempted to remedy this by using the X61s heatsink, but I don't recommend this.

Try looking for an X61 with a broken screen. You can transplant the entire X61s lid assembly on the X61.

Personal experience, a X61s heatsink is enough to handle a T8100, P8700 or P8800. TPFC just might be needed.
There is a "good" version of X61s heatsink which does not need TPFC, but it shares same FRU as ordinary ones so quite hard to find.....

If you have a BGA station, Great!!!!
get a P8800 BGA (SLGLA), a X61 motherboard, modified X61s heatsink(so that it can fit on normal X61 mobo).
The modified BIOS and tutorial is on 51nb forum, you will need 0.889mm solder balls ;)

And you will love it, I promise ;)

Don't forget the DDR2-800 RAM and the necessary changes to the memory timing data.

Ok, but I didn't wanna do the processor frequency mod...

Thanks anyway...

Thank you all! I think I'll go with the x61 MOBO with the x61s heatsink... I'll post news of the project as soon as possible.
