My SXGA+ display in my standard X61 has started to act funny. It'll just show a bunch of vertical lines that slowly fade, but if I torque it a little with the lid off, it works correctly. I checked and the LCD cable is plugged in correctly.

This most recent time I mounted the display using careful applications of foil tape on the hinges, and it's done a good job keeping the display in place. The frame had been cut into a "U" shape so as to fit on the top, but tape protected the top still.

Has anyone found a better reliable way of mounting the HV121-P01 display, since its mounting system isn't compatible? If this LCD is permanently damaged I don't plan on replacing it since it's just too expensive to just mount it again and have it maybe fail. Not worth it.

I had never tried to do this, but since I already had an X60s parts machine open and a 'scratch' HV12P01-101 handy (No glass, no digitizer)...
I trimmed the tabs, stuck it in the lid and snapped it shut... no problem. No clearance issues, it's centered, it's even loose enough it slides around a bit. What is the problem people are having fitting this screen such that they're cutting the frame?

Oh, I see... the wifi antennas extend under the frame and that extra few hundredths does make clearances tight. OTOH, I was still able to mount and snap closed with no gaps after mounting with proper hinges in place + antennas, even if there was no longer any depth to spare.

I had a problem recently on a Dell laptop with a faulty LVDS cable. The display would start showing lots of coloured noise shortly after turning the laptop on, and the noise would clear completely when little pressure was applied to the motherboard-side connector. One replacement LVDS cable later and its perfectly fine.

That would cause intermittent horizontal noise. Bibin is describing a connections either coming loose or shorting on the controller->matrix cable (or possibly a fault in the vertical drivers on the controller board).

The effect is a little different under Linux and Windows as well. In Linux, if I touch the corner of the display lightly with my hand, teh display enters a state where it freezes and slowly fades away, except for the top ~4 lines or so, which continue to work more or less. Under Windows, it does that sometimes, but others it will roll, as if it has lost the Vsync signal but the rest are working (like messing with Vertical Hold on an old TV set!). These problems are happening too far downstream of the LVDS connection, unfortunately.
