Thinkpad X60s BSOD Memory fail help needed

#1 Post by madsam106 » Sat Nov 07, 2015 12:55 pm

So, my thinkpad X60s has been running well since I bought it a couple of years ago. Last week while running Memory Map program (hooked up to my Garmin GPS) it crashed with the old blue screen of death

and would then not reboot! At first I thought the hard drive was duff and bought a new one - fitted it bit still wouldn't boot. Got some help off a mate suggesting it may be memory fail.

So, I removed one of the two memory sticks (1x1gb and 1x512mb) the 512mb one and voila we have boot up into Windows XP. I bought a replacement stick and fitted it and it wouldn't boot.

I'm now running on 1gb of ram but have a new 512mb in a box that the thinkpad doesn't like

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated

Cheers in advance

Sam

Welcome to the Forum.
A bunch of stop-error 0A explanations: http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm

To test your memory, run Memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/
Try first 1 module in 1 slot, then that same module in the other slot.
Do the same for the other module.
Finally, test both together, then swap them and test again.

BTW, that X60s can take up to 3GB of memory (2GB + 1GB).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

1. Turn off the laptop, remove the battery, disconnect the charger.
2. open the memory access panel and remove all the RAM sticks. Remove the HDD as well.
3. press and hold the power button for ~15 seconds.
4. Look at the markings around the RAM slots to determine which one is the first RAM slot. I don't have an X61 to open up at the moment, but there might be a label like "DIMM 0" and "DIMM 1" or DM1 and DM2 -- you get the idea. The slot with the lower number is the first slot (obviously).
5. Install the 1GB RAM on the first slot. now plug in the charger and turn on the laptop. After confirming that it boots, turn it off, and disconnect the charger.
6. Wait for a 15 seconds before installing the 512MB RAM on the second slot. Plug the charger again and turn on the laptop. I'm going to assume that the 512MB will be detected properly at this point.

Grab a copy of memtest86+, make a bootable USB for it, then use it to test your RAM.

Ok, tried 1gb module in first slot (guessing, as there is no indication) didn't boot, tried it in 2nd slot and booted. Added 512mb stick to first slot and wouldn't boot.

ran Memtest86 on the 1gb module - no problems

Tried 512mb module in slot 2 working!

Looks like it might be the actual slot that's damaged

Any more ideas people?

Try this:

Remove all RAM run then turn on the laptop. Of course it will give an error beep.
Turn it off, disconnect all power sources, then put in the 1GB RAM in the first slot.
Connect power and turn on.

Tried this, no joy. Both memory sticks work in same slot, neither work in the other!

Anything else I can try?

Might be a problem with the RAM slot itself. :<
