Fitting X61 fan into X61s
Fitting X61 fan into X61s
Hi All,
After browsing through all 4 pages worth of topics with "fan" in the subject:
- has anyone tried or at least considered shortening X61 main fan housing to fit it into an X61s? The main reason for looking into it is availability and pricing of brand-new 42X3805 ones compared to 42X3804 ones, as well as reluctance to fiddle with CPU/GPU heatsink because of no experience at it whatsoever.
- is 42X3805 electrically compatible with X61s? (I do realize it uses a different connector but fitting the right one from a dead native fan seems easy)
Many thanks in anticipation!

Has been done:
https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/16997 ... t-einbauen pic warning!
But it is a crazy amount of work. With no real benefit if you instead get the fan number 3 / 42X3804 in this pic:

Thank you: that's quite a bit of effort indeed but I now feel there are a few variants available.wileE wrote:Has been done:

If you mean the fan #3 with its plastic housing alone (w/o heatsink) that'd be ideal but I haven't seen any yet for some reason.wileE wrote:But it is a crazy amount of work. With no real benefit if you instead get the fan number 3 / 42X3804 in this pic:

Update: just found brand-new UDQFVEH24FFD (original X61s fan/heatsink assy 42X3804 has UDQFVEH15FFD; further research revealed UDQFVEH24FFD is used in X201s heatsink assy 60Y5423). It also says E233037 DC5V 0.25A, so wondering if it fits:

Re: Fitting X61 fan into X61s
Get an x61 base and transplant the x61s motherboard into it, then mount the x61 fan.
I've done this switch 3 times without hitch. It also works with x60s motherboard (which I'm typing on now)
The benefit is you get better fan/cooler/airflow and there is slightly more air (by volume) inside the machine.

Thanks for your response - sorry I only noticed it now by chance. Is this mod documented somewhere? What I'm after is which particular parts are to be swapped out, how that affects outside shape/dimensions of the laptop, any side issues encountered during base swap etc.
Meanwhile I bought brand-new X201s fan UDQFVEH24FFD mentioned above with the goal of trying it instead of noisy UDQFVEH15FFD in one of my X61s laptops one day: hope that it works. Still wondering why there's not a single brand-new UDQFVEH15FFD on the market.

Re: Fitting X61 fan into X61s
Let's say you put your x61s on the table. To do this swap, you will need these additional things on your table:
What you'll need
1. x61, or x60, base
2. x61 fan + heat sink
3. thermal paste
4. rubbing alcohol & lint free rag
5. screw driver
Step by step
a. Remove screen from x61s
b. Remove motherboard from x61s
c. Remove heat sink from motherboard
d. Clean x61 heatsink & cpu of old thermal grease
e. Add rice sized dab of thermal grease to center of cpu's surface
f. [add either grease or thermal pad to gpu - I'm not sure which is perfered]
g. Attach x61 heatsink to motherboard
h. Install motherboard into x61/x60 base
i. Attach screen
Result
After you're finished, on the table you should have:
I) your new computer
II) an empty x61s base
III) x61s fan assembly

Re: Fitting X61 fan into X61s
I used a UDQFVEH23FFD on a X60s board recently. It is 9mm high and fits well in the s bottom case.dandreye wrote: Meanwhile I bought brand-new X201s fan UDQFVEH24FFD mentioned above with the goal of trying it instead of noisy UDQFVEH15FFD in one of my X61s laptops one day: hope that it works. But it spins faster than the original fan. Have not found a UDQFVEH15FFD anywhere.

Much appreciated: looks fairly straightforward. Let it be my back up option in case UDQFVEH15FFD swap for UDQFVEH24FFD fails for whatever reason.
One more question if I may: do you know if it's possible to fit X61s's standard fan/heatsink assembly 42X3804 shown in the following picture into X60s instead of standard 41V9748 or 42X4399 in it?
http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/Orig ... 7.2.ywkrwx
If so then it'd greatly simplify noisy fan swap in X60s, where entire fan/heatsink assembly 41V9748 or 42X4399 would otherwise need swapping every time.

Yes, the X61s heatsink is compatible with the X60s.

Awesome ) I have to admit I didn't think about such option when I opened 41V9748 or 42X4399 in my X60s hoping to get rid of the noise (just to avoid confusion, I have a noisy fan in my X60s besides a noisy fan in one of my X61s's): as just mentioned in my response to jaspen-meyer above, I rather thought about putting X61s's standard fan/heatsink assembly 42X3804 into the X61s once and then swapping the fan alone from then on if ever required again. If it worked for you with UDQFVEH23FFD hopefully it should also work for me with UDQFVEH24FFD (which is 9mm thick too) and even save me buying a 42X3804 if I follow your way: brand-new ones aren't cheap.
Just one question though: do you happen to have a picture of the opposite side of your fan/heatsink assembly fitted with UDQFVEH23FFD? I'd like to see if there's any metal where UDQFVEH23FFD's plastic pins stick out.
Update: UDQFVEH24FFD thickness added into the text above (it's 9mm).

I cut off the pins and used a heat resistant tape. Not pretty, but the angle grinder I used was a bit too large for this.

Re: Fitting X61 fan into X61s
Perfect: thank you. I'll probably try soldering little ears to the metal base in those 3 places though.
Yeah seeing angle grinder right next to all that subtle stuff was unexpected ) Planning to use my Silverline 249765 multi tool for this job:
