Then fan on my X61 is quite noisy.

Any suggestions as to how to quieten it down?

Lubricate the fan. If that doesn't work, replace it.

What do I lubricate it with?

Personally, I use light machine oil like this, but silicone-based liquid lubricants will probably work just as well.

I use grease or petrolium jelly.
