Crashing x61 with too high data rate
I have locked up my x61 several times in a row by doing a download from a fast server and nearing 20mb/s over wifi. every time it starts to level out around 20mb/s it locks up with the wifi signal still flashing.
I have limited the incoming bandwidth to 2mb/s and have avoided any crashes yet. Windows 7 pro 64

Which wireless card do you have installed?

Re: Crashing x61 with too high data rate
I'm guessing the wifi card is overheating causing a crash due to instability.

Re: Crashing x61 with too high data rate
It has a 4965AGN. I have an Atheros 9285 around I will replace the 4965 with soon.
I was worried I was writing too quickly to the SATA bus and crashing that.

Cards that have proven good in the X61 are the Intel 6200N and 6300N.
Only difference between them: 6200 uses 2 antenna wires, 6300 can use 3, but works just as good with the (outer) two.
You'd need an extender, since these cards are half-size: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331161237621

If you have a copy of linux laying around, try downloading with that to confirm it's a windows issue.

+1 for the 6300N. I have one in my X61s.RealBlackStuff wrote:Cards that have proven good in the X61 are the Intel 6200N and 6300N.

RBS: Do you have a link for the 6300N card?
Is it this one?

You can get it cheaper and faster here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141956087196
That card has a Dell number (4WOON) on it, but it's the right model, and if you have Middleton's BIOS installed: no problem.

Thanks RBS, JPOESQ and others! I just purchased the 6300N and half-card adapter.
(P.S. RBS did that Atheros AR9380 card work out better for you than me?)

Re: Crashing x61 with too high data rate
My X61s has a half-size 6300N with adapter, but it's currently not being used.
My current travel-X201 (with X200s 1440x900 LED-screen) has an AR9380.
Never had a problem with either card.
Not sure yet what to put in my X220 and X230, most likely a Killer card.

Here?:
https://www.amazon.com/Bigfoot-Networks ... B008H5V9ZU
Will it work in and provide more functionality in a X61 over the 6300N?

Re: Crashing x61 with too high data rate
It's a matter of preference, really. Killer cards are Atheros-chipped, and if one prefers that chipset over Intel (I do) it would likely make them happier...but they still get stuck with 300 Mbps using two antennae...E350 wrote: Will it work in and provide more functionality in a X61 over the 6300N?
Having said that, the price is insane. You can have an AR9380 for 1/3 of that amount, and 9280 for even less...

What about their visual bandwidth control:

Or their Advanced stream detect:

Or their routers:

Haven't tested any of them so I can't say.
Having said that...on an "average" router and within standard environment, with 2 antennae involved on the laptop you're extremely unlikely to notice a difference between Killer 1202 and AR9280.

Re: Crashing x61 with too high data rate
@E350: You seem to have expensive taste! Again!
Much cheaper here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261913392772
My potential Killer would be an AC-card, but not before I get an AC-router (if ever).
