x6 Ultrabase read speeds with x60s

#1 Post by jaspen-meyer » Sat Oct 22, 2016 5:21 am

Is it possible to get Sata-I transfer rates between an x60s and a hdd caddy?

I occasionally clone my x60s's harddrive and do other tasks which involve transfering >20GB of data to/from the x60s's drive. With my current setup I've measured read speeds from an x6 Ultrabase, FRU 42W3108, to the x60s to be 31 MB/s. The same x6 Ultrabase, attached to an x61s gives read speeds of 85MB/s. Tested with a sata III ssd in a sata-to-pata hdd caddy, copying a 600mb file to a ramdisk.

The hdd caddy I'm using is sata-to-PATA.

I used to use an Apricot Drivewire, but things go much faster with this Sabrent USB-STP3: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252367541510

That'll give me USB 2.0 speeds or something more? USB is, +/- 8MB/s, what I'm getting now.

Almost any problem which one can imagine, is believable when a ATA to ATA translator bridge is involved. I suggest booting X60s with a true PATA device in bay, then hot swap your SATA (bridged) bay module. If performance improves (when booted with PATA present), then your ThinkPad might exhibit firmware bug in initialising ATA controller.
