Even with BIOS+EC update installed the system isn't reporting it. I'll report back in a few hours.

Meanwhile, the EC update did indeed fix the fan problem… a bit too well. The aftermarket X200 fan I installed doesn't run at all until I hit 100°C, but it sounds like it's trying (and failing) to start earlier (constant clicking sound coming from it). Can someone with the stock fan see whether the fan is supposed to be running in the 60-70°C range? (With latest EC patch, without it never even gets that warm.)

Edit: Battery life estimate is around 5-6h, as before the updates. Translates into ~12W power draw. Pretty high still, but that's with a [censored] USB wifi dongle (still haven't replaced the broken internal antennae) and CCFL backlight.

Looks pretty reasonable, apart from package sleep. dmdsoftware, what kernel are you running that you don't get the Broadwell sleep states?

That reminds me, I dropped in an older hard drive from another system that hasn't been used in a while. So the kernel is probably somewhere around 3.18 to 4.4. I'll be pushing what I have on the carbon to it tonight -- 4.8.0-040800rc3-generic #201608212032

Anyone had problem with hard freezes? Got my X62 a few days ago and after a about an hour of operation it would just freeze (no network response, sound buffer repeating if sound was playing). It seemed to not happen in Linux, and downgrading the Intel GPU driver seemed to alleviate the issue on Windows, but after using the machine for a few hours it froze again. Updated the BIOS to 1210 which made no difference.

Decided that the first thing to check would be the memory so I downloaded memtest86 and ran that for about 5 hours (completion of default 4 passes) with no issues. However this seems to have made the issue worse since the laptop now freezes within 2 minutes in both Windows and Linux. No errors in dmesg or Windows log, which of course makes sense if it's a real CPU lock up. It does seem to be tied to GPU usage though since running memtest again ran fine for 1 hour, but any OS that uses the GPU locks up.

Going to try to borrow RAM from a friend to make sure it's not the modules I bought, but it's looking like I might have a defective CPU. (For reference: RAM that I have is 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance CMSX16GX3M2B1600C9 and disk drive is a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO.)

Could it be overheating. Was it a prepared system, or did you install the motherboard yourself? Have you monitored the CPU temperatures?

It is a prepared system. I have not watched them previously (although it's unlikely since the freeze had no correlation to workload), but right now CPU temps reported at freeze is about 45°C.

The board seems to have buggy iommu. I had the same problem in linux, but adding "intel_iommu=igfx_off" to kernel boot options solved the problem for me. I wonder if you can do something similar in windows.

What is your X62 cpu? Is it a ES version? Do you think theses problems could come from the fact certain cpus are ES version ?

I need virtualization a lot so I would like to find out if there is a specifit batch number to avoid.

According to an ebay description:

First they made 50 prototype boards, then a 1st batch boards, then a 2nd batch boards and finally they made a cheaper 3rd batch boards with I5 ES (= Engineering Sample) CPU instead of regular/final I7 CPU.

Doesn't seem to be my problem, still freezing after 5-10 minutes.

As far as I've been able to tell I didn't get an ES (didn't see anything in CPU-Z, BIOS, or Linux cpuinfo). An ES may or may not have more problems since it could just be a retail CPU sold at a lower cost for preproduction or it could be an early sample/stepping which could have undocumented flaws fixed in the final revision.

Edit: Just tried other DIMMs (different brand and timings) and saw no difference in the freezing. Really thinking there's a CPU or board defect.

Did some Windows 7 updates that appear to have broken the speaker output. Headphones still work, but I'm not sure what specifically changed. You can still "see" the equalizer going when sound is playing and you click on the volume icon, but there's no sound.
I'll do a bit of digging, anyone experienced this so far?

This depends on GPU RC6 and SATA power management being acrive. I enabled Aggressive LPM and DEVSLP in the BIOS (I used shorter intervals than the default), and activated SATA min_power in TLP.
Reading around (especially the two famous mjg's posts https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/34868.html https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/41713.html) it seems that the X62 will never be able to reach PC10, as this needs Panel Self Refresh, and the old screen of the X62 doesn't support it.

It should reach PC8 though, but it doesn't because of the SD card reader. The same Realtek card reader that lspci oddly reports as

is found in the Thinkpad E460, and one commentator reports being able to reach PC8 only after disabling it in the BIOS, because currently there seems to be no proper power management for this device (even with ASPM L0s and L1 enabled). Unfortunately the X62 BIOS has no option to disable the card reader :-/
There is a different driver for this part on Realtek's website that could be worth trying, but I wasn't able to build it against kernel 4.10.

However, power consumption looks MUCH better with PC6 active. The system idles around 5-6W (this is after LED screen conversion, brightness at 30%) and doesn't reach the crazy 30W peaks that I was seeing before.

Hey, thanks a lot for this! Did not even think to check their page.
It worked! But I used my old unav driver. I can't download from their filesharing service. The speed is almost 0.
The same applies to the archive with BIOS. Could someone upload it to some other service, please?

The bios link resolves to page not found for me and the driver times out during download for me.

I'd be happy to host these on Google Drive if someone can locate the files

As for the bios link - you need to remove the "https://" part from the link (pan.baidu.com/s/1i5yYD0L).
And then you'll be able to start the download proccess. Hope you'll be lucky enough to accomplish this

I will upload my unav driver tomorrow. It's an original file from lenovo. Can't remember the laptop it's used for.

Has anyone else had an issue with the keyboard having a high spot, almoat raised in the area near the volume controls?

That's where the fan is. Which model do you have? the 's' or the 'non-s'? Was it a whole system or you adapted a system with a purchased motherboard.

I have the 's' version with the 's' fan. Sits flush in that area. But I could see situations where you could have some pressure against the keyboard to flex it out. The wifi antennas run through here, as well as the LCD cable. If it is the purchased whole system, the LCD cable is custom and most likely fatter then the original which could be causing the issue.

So I had some time to take the x62 apart. I bought a prebuilt with the i5 (its great, and super quick) which I believe is in an x61 shell. I also have an x61s and this one seems to have a different sized battery, as I used the x61s battery to power this one up and had to remove the extender attached to the battery.

My issue was that the left side of the keyboard was slightly raised which caused a little bit more travel for the left side of my hand. I knew this would be an easy fix. I took off the keyboard and noticed that one scres that is under the battery, and holding that side of the kb, was not tight, but in there. I proceeded to take of the kb and made sure that the ribbon cables were all the way down, an i added a little bit of tape above the cable. I also changed the screw that was loose and made sure to catch a few threads on it this time. Seams to be flat now and the keyboard movement is completely gone.

Some other issues I have noticed was the mini-dp does not work, but mini-hdmi does. The fan kicks on a lot, so i think i have to configure something using TPFanControl, maybe i need the drivers. My fn+display (as well as fn+f5) key does not work either. That might be a driver thing. Also, the bluetooth light stays on when the computer is asleep. Honestly, im nit picking. The prebuilt is really awesome, the new keyboard feel is great, I ordered some new feet to replace the 10 year old ones from ebay because i'm that particular. I look forward to future 51nb creations.

EDIT: I tried with a new hdmi port cable and both minidp and minihdmi work well.

Hi, anyone have driver issues?

1) Mouse:
Anyone experienced issues with external USB mice (on any port)? I thought it was a particularly crappy mouse at the office, but then I found other mice with issues too. It seems that after some use (time varies), buttons and scroll wheels seem to get remapped somehow. In particular, the scroll wheel starts zooming (both in a browser AND on the desktop, I didn't know the latter was even possible) and for some reason left-clicks will open emails in a new tab. As you might imagine, this behavior is totally unusable for CAD work, which is extremely frustrating. Has anyone run into similar mouse issues? I've tried removing and reinstalling all mice, but no dice.

2) Unknown devices:
There are 4 unknown devices in the Device Manager, three Bluetoothe Peripheral devices and a USB Controller. Windows doesn't find any more drivers when I ask it to check manually.

Any ideas?

There is a different driver for this part on Realtek's website that could be worth trying, but I wasn't able to build it against kernel 4.10.

Have you tried patches from here: https://github.com/astyonax/patched-RTS5227-5229 ?
This driver haven't made any difference for me: pc6 is max for now.

I have.
With the patched driver, r8168 from Realtek website and the proper power management parameters in place for both modules (see below) I got to PC7, but no further than that.

Yep, I've got pc7 as well now. The nice thing about having pc7 is that the laptop is absolutely silent now
(finally!) during the usual work including watching video using vaapi.
