Lenovo Thinkpad X60 WWAN questions

#1 Post by khonghing » Wed Feb 22, 2017 2:07 am

Hi!

I got a Thinkpad X60 (1706-C92) lying around in my drawer for quite sometime, as my secondary notebook.
There is a WWAN antenna available at the top right corner of the LCD display.
However, there isn't a SIM card reader available (SIM placeholder available on motherboard) besides the DIMM slots.
I also noticed that there are LED indicators for WiFi and Bluetooth, but no LED for WWAN.
In this case, can WWAN still be used in my laptop even I were to install a Lenovo approved WWAN card since the antenna is available?
I am currently residing in Singapore, with all GSM carriers around the island.

Regards
Edmund

Welcome to the forum.
You can get replacement clearplates with WWAN on it, such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/310417192827
Either way, WWAN would work with proper WWAN/SIM cards.

Thanks for your reply.
Since it does not have the SIM card reader soldered on the motherboard, can it still work?

Check the SIM-card area, it may be a plug-in unit and not soldered.
WWAN should work with a WWAN card, just not the dialing part.

I don't think its a plug-in type, rather it has to be soldered.

This is exactly how the SIM area looked like, on my notebook

Those with the SIM reader will look like this

You should be able to buy a separate SIM card reader, I bought one for my Z61m but never installed it....so I can't say how easy or how difficult the procedure is

You may want to check there is a slot for WWAN on the motherboard (beside wifi card) -- some x60 boards have one and some don't. There are 10 screws on the bottom marked with pictures of a keyboard or a 'hair brush'. All screws are the same size. Look up "X60 HMM pdf" -- there are detailed drawings in it (HMM = Hardware Maintaince Manual).

I have a X61 with the WWAN sim holder but I always use a Mobile phone with WIFI hotspot activated. You will find a Laptop that was built around 2006 won't be as effective in its technology. WWAN is relatively power hungry also. Mobile technology has come a long way and it probably has gone past Laptop technology.IMO

I opened it up to take a look at the mini-PCIe region and there isn't a WWAN slot available.
So i guess WWAN is definitely out the question.
The only thing i don't understand is the presence of the protruded WWAN antenna since WWAN isn't available on my particular unit... :?:

Someone swapped the motherboard, or they swapped the lid.
