X61 keyboards

#1 Post by karotlopj » Tue Jul 25, 2017 5:32 am

I want to buy a replacement keyboard for an X61. Are there different types of keyboard (apart from layout)? I want to make sure that whatever I buy will fit.

And does anyone in the UK have one available?

Yes, there are different brands. RBS knows all the brands and which ones are best. Just do some research with the part number and you shpuld get your desired part.

I have a 42T3503.

I found this which looks a lot worse for wear:-

In comparison, mine looks almost pristine (after cleaning it :) ). I guess I could swap the missing keys if it works...

2 UK kb models are available Chicony & NMB - I've found the NMB ones best FRU 42T3471.

They are all listed in the HMM linked in forum header.

You may be surprised - I bought used keyboard for my T500 after breaking original one. Some keys were not in it's place (I assume that this keyboard was assembled with what was laying around) so I though about swapping them in the right position - I was really surprised that they didn't fit in places they should go - the key mechanism was inverted as far as I remember. Fortunately I was able to make frankenkeyboard using both of them. So be aware, that some keys might not fit in correct places.

In a T400/T500/W500 you can also put keyboards from the T60/T61.
They are much sturdier than those flimsy pieces of junk.
Why else would they need to also insert those keyboard supports like this?

AFAIK no other Thinkpads needed those!
Here's my info on those:
Looks like there are 4 sets of parts depending on 14" or 15" chasis and whether integrated or hybrid/switchable graphics.
These make use of existing screws and tapped holes in the rollcage for mounting. As such, they can be retrofit to existing systems, but a customer would need to be careful in how these are installed to ensure proper routing of wires, etc.
