I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
It's a new year and I'd like to upgrade my x60s daily driver, this year with a new hard drive. Throughput is capped at Sata I speeds but I guess I could get additional performance using a drive with lower latency.
Am trying to figure out what my SSD upgrade options are. Perhaps something like this together with a suitable drive:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/302483546255
That adapter supports B or B+M, so it won't work with a Samsung 960 NVMe.
This image from wikipedia shows pins -> naming convention:

Anyone using something like this in their x6x with words of advice?

Is it really so much more performance over a standard SATA SSD to be worth the extra complexity and/or price?jaspen-meyer wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 12:31 pmThroughput is capped at Sata I speeds but I guess I could get additional performance using a drive with lower latency.

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
NVMe uses 4 PCIe lanes.
You can only access 1 lane on an X60, on the WLAN slot.
It also needs BIOS support in order to boot. Of course, such support is nonexistent in the X60 series
Stick to a regular SSD.

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
I imagine that the NVMe-to-SATA adapter takes care of all this by presenting the drive as a SATA device to the system. But it doesn't seem like any of the advantages of NVMe will be kept by the transformation.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 2:03 pmNVMe uses 4 PCIe lanes.

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Latency of my current drive is 0.180ms. Reported latency of 'Samsung 850 EVO M.2'
is 5x lower, 0.0324ms (source: http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_85 ... ssd_review). The result with an adapter, and in an x60, will be slower we assume.
Also, idle power usage is substantially lower.
Aside from (perhaps minor) performance improvements, one benefit of the m.2 format is it can be used in newer machines.

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
That's an M.2 SSD with SATA/AHCI interface, not NVMe.jaspen-meyer wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 3:38 pmLatency of my current drive is 0.180ms. Reported latency of 'Samsung 850 EVO M.2' is 5x lower, 0.0324ms (source: http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_85 ... ssd_review).
See if you can find a SATA to M.2 adapter board that supports 2280 size SSDs, then jam it in the X60s HDD bay.Samsung 850 EVO M.2 Specifications
Capacities: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB
Dimensions (LxWxH): Max 80.15 x Max 22.15 x Max 0.8 (mm)
Interface: SATA 6Gb/s (compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s)
Form Factor: M.2 (2280)

Re: I want to put an NVMe ssd into my x60s
mPCIe slot with either mSATA or PCIe mode; mSATA is SATA II speed or x1 lane PCIe design.
On non-NVME computer using a PCIe SSD as second non-boot if one can wire it in via mPCIe if using using SATA or PCIe x1 connection on M.2 SSD but in SATA connection via mPCIe can be used as boot. PCIe or SATA this depends on M.2 SSD makers, how ever can be either PCIe NVME or SATA mode. 1 notch is always x4 PCIe lanes, two notches is x2. Some M.2 cards does not have SATA available.
Lengths of M.2 SSD is 40mm, 60mm and 80mm; designation: 2240, 2260 or 2280 respectively. Can be either x2 or x4 PCIe lanes. M.2 in PCIe mode also allows for x1 lane operation as well.
NOTE: one can buy SATA 2.5" connector to M.2 adapter easily but some does not have mounting screws frame so be careful when buying one from ebay. Also can purchase mPCIe to 2240 M.2 adapter as well, inexpensive. Yet also there is another version PCIe or M.2 adapter with remote wired to M.2 connector via flex cable but so expensive to allow up to M.2 2280 SSD costs 75 to 80 CDN.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection
