X61 - Impact of wireless card

#1 Post by tottoroo » Tue Jan 09, 2018 5:45 am

Hi,

I was wondering how much of an impact a new wireless card can make in an x61, is it worth? My internet is like 20Mb/s and I am currently in China, so it's not great, but I was wondering if it would be a little snappier.

I have an X61 with a 3945ABG installed. And I have an Intel 6200abgn with two antennas lying around, or I could even buy a new one (ac?)

The most noticeable impact of a new wireless card is lesser heat on the right palmrest. :D

You'll only need AC if you have an AC router (or planning to upgrade in the future).

Also, you'll need to flash the Middleton BIOS in order to remove the wifi card whitelist.

Middleton bios, I have.

So it doesn't seem a worthy upgrade... I may try and swap it one day, just for the kicks, once I open it for manteinance.

Thanks for your reply.

One more thing: 6200ABGN can use 5GHz channels and 300mbps max IIRC, while 3945 is limited to wifi-G (2.4GHz, 54mbps).

Access Connections is reporting Wireless LAN 5GHz 780 Mbps as I write this.

Intel 7260 AC wireless card.

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-7260-HMWG- ... intel+7620

I have installed one in the X61 2.4 GHz and in my wife's T61p 2.4 GHz and in my T61p 2.5 GHz

I like the cards. Seem to help. The 2.4GHz band provides longer range connection between the router and the laptops.
The 5GHz band would seem to provide quicker connections between items on the LAN.

TP-Link Archer C7 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (AC1750) (We have three of them and they have worked flawlessly.)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BU ... UTF8&psc=1

You must flash the BIOS with Middletons

A new wifi card can be useful upgrade if you don't have bluetooth and you get a combi card.

Intel 3945 is just one
abg, 1x1:1

The 6200 is abgn, 2x2:2
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Intel_Centrin ... (622ANHMW)

It'll make a noticable difference, especially on fast networks.
