[Is it Possible?] Changing Thinklight on a regular x61 to a new one

#1 Post by madicetea » Thu Jan 25, 2018 7:58 pm

Hi guys. (It's me again! wheeee)

In my own thoughts and getting lost in academic procrastination, it occurred to me that my carrier gives extra SIM cards for cheap and I use my x61 relatively often.
It would be nice to not have to depend on only WiFi and to be able to use the 4G data that covers most my region, same as I do on my phone.

Does anyone know a 4G compatible card for the Middleton's flashed x61 (regular) boards that they could suggest me (and what I should be paying for it if the seller isn't highballing me)?

Also, I only have one pair of wireless antenna leads coming through to the mobo - how would I line a second antenna through the laptop to accommodate for the WWAN card?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Is it Possible?] Installing a WWAN card alongside WiFi Card for 4G Data

I used to bother and hassle with a WWAN card which is limited to 1 or 2 laptops. A better way is to set you phone to hotspot tethering and use the wifi off of your phone. Better, simpler, and works with all devices.

If you want to use the WWAN slot in your X61 then you'll have to find a WWAN card adapter that will work with your carrier. Most laptops with WWAN capability already have the cables attachment there but not used. If you don't have this then you will have to run new cables. Again a lot of work in my books. Just the the WIFI from you cellphone. Takes me about 2 minutes to set this up.

I would consider this but my cell phone is dumb and can only share data via USB tethering.

Plus, there is another project I need to consider as well, namely, my thinklight is dead and I want it back.

Is there an easy guide to getting the thinklight from somewhere(?) and installing it?

The Thinklight is part of the LCD cable. There are a number of possible causes when it doesn't light up:

- bad cable (replace cable, unless you know how to fix flex cables)
- broken LED (replace LED only if you're good enough to solder on flex cables)
- power is not being supplied to the LED (board issue?)
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

Take any unused cable with a working LED and mark it OK near the LED, mark the rest of the cable as BAD.
Lay the X61 LED-cable-part on top of the OK cable so that LEDs are on top of one another, then cut both cables at the same place/together.
Carefully scratch the lacquer off the cable-ends to expose the wiring. Using pieces of thin wire, solder both cable-ends together, cut off the leftover thin wire, then check if the LED works. If OK, insulate the soldering.
Done that several times, takes about 5-10 minutes.
