Transplant x61 second fan

#1 Post by Hifumin » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:39 pm

Hello.

I have an x61 that doesn't have the palmrest fan, but I found a dead x61 that does. If I just solder the connector to the fanless x61 and plug the in the fan, would it work or does the board need other components? The palmrest gets quite hot and I'm trying to see if that fan helps cool it off.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.
You might be better off by swapping the wifi card for a half-size Intel 6200N or 6300N with a half-size adapter, such as shown here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/272434257283

Thanks, I'll do that then. It's way easier and less risky than trying to solder something to the main board by myself.

I remember an older thread about adding a second fan, though I haven't had luck finding it.

IIRC it involved reading the embedded controller's firmware from an X61 with the 2nd fan, then flashing it onto the X61 without the 2nd fan.

And what would happen if I connect the second fan in parallel to the main fan? they both need the same voltage and current.

I don't know if you'll blow something or not.

If you do go through with it, leave the 2nd fan's third wire (fan RPM sense) disconnected-- having two RPM signals in one wire will probably drive the embedded controller nuts and spit out a "Fan error".

I don't want to risk blowing my pc, so I'll just change the wifi card and call it a day then. Thanks for answering guys.
