X61 black screen

#1 Post by krekling » Fri Mar 30, 2018 12:01 pm

Hi all.

I've got an old X61 which has served me well for many years. Lately I've moved on to newer models for my daily use, but thought it would be nice to give it away to my mother.

When I turn it on now (after it has been laying inactive in the drawer for many months (years?), the screen is all black. If I hold the machine at a specific angle, I can barely see that the OS has in fact booted, but it's impossible to see anything under normal circumstances.

Could it be that the backlight is broken? Is it possible to fix by myself, and in that case, do I need any spare parts or extra tools?

Regards, krekling

Take a flashlight or your phone's light and stick it agaisnt the screen. If you can see a picture around where tge light is, It is a dead backlight. I don't know if it is a dead inverter or CCFL, others know how to diagnose that.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
