x61 and DRAM-less SSD
x61 and DRAM-less SSD
Gentlemen,
I've recently came across a nice x61 in mint condition. Although I use x220 (with x230 MoBo) as my daily workhorse, I would like to turn the x61 into a "portable typewriter". It is just simply such a nice device that I can't resist.
Now comes the question:
- I would like to definitely install a small SSD there. I know that I can't get anything better than SATA-II out of the unofficial BIOS. Do you think that it is ok to be cheap and take a one of those cheap DRAM-less SSDs (like a400 from Kingston)? Or should I rather stick with normal SSD (such as 850 EVO)?
The DRAM-less SSDs go very cheap on German Amazon now. It is really tempting.
PS: I am targeting mainly Linux (mint).
Thanks for any hint.
Jiri

Re: x61 and DRAM-less SSD
IMO spending a lot on a 10 year old Thinkpad is unwise. A DRAM-less SSD should give you a good 2-3 years of normal use.

If you need it only as a typewritter - I'd look around for a 16 gb sata III ssd, like this:

That's only usable for DOS or Linux. Windows should work with just 60GB, but I'd recommend at least 120GB, to have free space for Windows updates and whatnot.

Re: x61 and DRAM-less SSD
Thanks a lot for your answers. I ended up buying 128 GB version of Kingston A400. I am still waiting for a battery in order to be able to upgrade bios and get SATA2.
Nevertheless, the performance increase is already significant.
