X60/s Frankenpad junk/spare parts build [pics to follow]

#1 Post by axur-delmeria » Tue May 01, 2018 10:06 am

I have this X60s board (with Core Solo U1300 CPU) with a bad fan on my shelf for the longest time, and a battered X60 chassis (with working heatsink and fan)... so I went ahead and put the two together. :D

The amusing results:
1. CPU temperature hovers around 50c, even at ~70% CPU utilization according to Task Manager.

2. The palmrest is hotter than the heatsink's exhaust-- I'm still using the stock Intel 3945BG wifi as I haven't flashed Zender's BIOS yet.

3. It's surprisingly usable (I'm typing this post on it), though noticeably sluggish; note that I'm running Debian Linux, booting from a 32GB SSD connected via USB.

4. Ran 7zip benchmark. Here's the result:

I honestly can't remember if the 7zip rating is better or worse than the Atom N270 netbook I had around 9 years ago.

I should try battery runtime tests next. :D

2M cache, 1.06 ghz, 533 fsb. That's slower than a Pentium M. Battery life especially with an LED screen should be amazing.

Testing with an 8-cell battery with 39 Wh capacity.

With wifi on and running Firefox, it's reporting an estimated 167 minutes runtime.
Note that I haven't undervolted it yet, as I don't have linux-phc compiled-- the kernel module needed for undervolting is out-of-tree, and has lots of dependencies I don't want to install on the 32GB SSD I'm currently using.

If the estimate is accurate, it would run in excess of 5 hours on a new, original 74 Wh 8-cell battery.

I still need to flash Zender BIOS.

Flashed Zender via Windows (temporarily installed HDD from another X60 that that Windows 7). After installing the AR9485 wifi card, it's detected in Linux, but the WiFi radio doesn't turn on.

I'm pretty sure this is one of those "tape Pin 20" issues, but I'd rather not tape it, as I want to be able to disable it when I need to.
Which means I'll have to test the other WiFi cards I have in storage to see which one works without taping. :I

AR9380 works in all T601 Frankies without any mods/tape.
Only the wifi light doesn't come on, but the switch is OK.

Not planning to buy a new wifi card, will just dig through my box of scraps.
There may be two to three cards in there somewhere.

Finally found a card that works. It's a Broadcom BCM4313 BGN (2.4GHz) [14e4:4727]. Getting it to work on Linux took a bit of fiddling, as I wasn't sure which kernel driver to use (there's at least 3 drivers for the b43 series).

Debian loaded wl (binary-only driver) by default, but wouldn't detect any networks, so I blacklisted it and used brcmsmac instead. Since it doesn't load automatically, I added it to /etc/modules.
