SXGA upgrade question

#1 Post by fourthree » Sun Jul 29, 2018 7:08 am

I've made a search but most of the posts were about installing SXGA inside X61, but I'm using an X61T mobo inside an X61 chassis.

1. Does it need a BIOS flash to support the SXGA panel?
2. The panel is N121X5-L06 but I'm not sure if I have the right cable -- does the SXGA cable work with XGA? I can't see why not, but better safe than sorry. I'm guessing I'll need a new cable anyway.

Thanks!

X61T uses the same LCD-cables for XGA and SXGA+, but they come in many varieties, better check the X61T HMM.
X61T also uses the same Middleton's BIOS for both.

First off:

You cannot use the normal X61 cable with the Tablet screens, even when using the X61T system board, without modification or an adapter cable.

The reason is that even though the connectors of the non-Tablet and Tablet screens are the same, the pinouts aren't. Besides the different pins of the video signals, the most critical parts are pins 1 and 2.

On the Tablet screens, it's

1 +3.3v
2 +3.3v

While on the non-Tablet screens it's

1 ground
2 +3.3v

When you plug the cable, the +3.3v power gets shorted to ground, which will blow a fuse on the system board at the very least. At worst, screen, board, perhaps even the LCD cable will be irrepairably damaged.
