X6x CMOS battery wiring
X6x CMOS battery wiring
Hi All,
Could anyone please explain what the "extra" (3rd) wire in X6x CMOS battery is for? Assuming it's a CR2032 (3V) cell inside I'm tempted to make my own because of their ridiculous pricing (>4 times more than what T4x batteries sell for).
Thanks in advance!

Can't remember if it's wired to the positive or negative of the CMOS battery.dandreye wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 9:01 amHi All,

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
Cut open the yellow plastic around the cell, so you can see where the wires go.
Be careful not to short it.
A piece of tape will fix it again.
My guess: RED to PLUS
Both BLACK and WHITE to GROUND

Thanks for your replies. So it's there not to carry some sort of signalling as one might think. Looks like the "extra" (white) wire is always coupled with black wire attached to battery's "-":

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
The best I can think of is a thermistor...but that doesn't make any sense. IBM/Lenovo hasn't used rechargable cells AFAIK since the 755 or 760 series.
On the very off chance it is....red would be positive, white would be one side of the thermistor, and black would be the other side of the thermistor and ground.

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
Get a new CMOS from a nearby pharmacy.
Take the plastic off the old CMOS.
Carefully tear the flat connector-strips from the battery (from the outside toward the middle, using pliers).
Straighten the old strips as best you can.
Put the black/white strip on the new battery's ground and the red strip on the plus side.
Make sure they cannot connect to each other!
Tightly put some electricians tape or scotch tape around it.
You're done.

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
If it were me I'd pickup some large diameter heat shrink tubing and use that. It won't come loose in a few years like electrical tape or Scotch tape. Also more "rugged". I know I can get some at my local electronics shop for next to nothing.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 9:53 amMake sure they cannot connect to each other!

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
I was actually thinking of using both: electrician's tape first to keep those strips in place and heat shrink tubing atop to reinforce the attachment.

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
good discussion. Two additional ideas:
1. if the yellow plastic is removed carefully, it can be replaced
perhaps with a bit of tape
2. soldering is OK, with a bit of flux on the battery, and a very
hot iron.

the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Looks good too, thanks ) Probably best to start with putting some insulation along battery edge to avoid shorting its poles. In fact the best solution would probably be using one of those battery sockets but there's barely any space on the mobo to glue it to... unless really long wires can be used.

I'd love to try it but I've never been particularly good with irons, so not even sure if I should ) Btw looks like some cells come with weld-on tabs although they cost more.

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
If you aren't good with a soldering iron getting prewelded tabs for soldering is a VERY GOOD IDEA! Trust me...exploding batteries is no fun, especially when wielding a 700 degree iron.

Wait, how much do they go for in the UK? They aren't even 8usd worth around here?dandreye wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 9:01 amHi All,

Re: X6x CMOS battery wiring
Oh yeah, reminds me of the time I did a mock solder with a regular fire torch and gave a couple fingers a few skin layers deep of a burn at 200c or so. I think I attempted this with an old 760 cell. No fun at all.Thinkpad4by3 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 7:41 pmIf you aren't good with a soldering iron getting prewelded tabs for soldering is a VERY GOOD IDEA! I can only imagine the pain of a 700c explosion (and don't forget goggles for anything that explodes - I like being able to see / not being blind).
