Ludicrious idea w/ X61T

#1 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Tue Dec 25, 2018 8:54 pm

If X61T panels have issues with developing air bubbles in the glue...then has anyone stuck the panel in a vacuum chamber to get rid of the bubbles?

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I guess the number of people who:

* have an X61T with bubbles
* have access to a vacuum chamber, and
* are members of this forum

is very small (if not zero).

Well I could turn that number from 0 to 1...but I doubt I'll get farther than that.

Then do it! Be ludicrous!
And please take pix before, during and after 'vacuuming' a bubbled X61T LCD.

Why else do you think X60T LCDs are in such high demand?

Well I'd need an X61T first and a vacuum chamber. The second part I could fabricate...and the first part I could buy off someone here.

But I'm not sure if I have time to do this....and DIY vacuum Chambers aren't what I'd consider very safe.

The ISS probably already has one up there....they'd just need to put it in the airlock for a few days(and tie it down so it doesn't go flying  ).

Aside from a full fledged vacuum chamber, most cabinetry shops, surfboard shops, etc that do a significant amount of laminate work have vacuum bag setups. The tabletop, (or surfboard) has the veneer glued onto it and then while the glue is uncured, the object is put into a large, sturdy plastic bag which is then sealed and a small vacuum pump attached to it. The pump is turned on and most of the air gets sucked out, thereby compressing the veneer and squeezing out excess glue. The pump is left hooked up and periodically kicks on to remove air that has leaked in, and thereby maintain physical pressure on the veneer until the glue has set up. I used one of these in a past life on a job one summer. If this were done in a warmed environment, this might cause a decrease in the viscosity of the "goo" in the screen and hasten release of the bubbles. It might even be possible to do this to an X61 tablet without having to remove the LCD screen if the screen were rotated so it faces out...although, I think you'd want to be able to access the edges of the LCD directly to be able to apply some kind of sealant where the air has leaked out to prevent recurrence.
Nifty idea, let us know how this works should you try it.
