X60 cpu upgrade(BGA)

#1 Post by ibmaking » Mon May 20, 2019 6:53 pm

I have a few x60 motherboards laying around and two of them have Libreboot installed. I've gone as far as I reasonably can with my upgrades and now I want to go further. I've been looking through the information here and I believe it may be possible to upgrade one with Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile up to a T7600. The only problem of course is that this model has a soldered on cpu. I've done quite a bit of research in rework and I understand it is a risky as well as possibly unrewarding thing to do to your board. Assuming that I have two boards to spare and I can find someone to do the work or do it myself, and losing a little money or having damage to my boards is no problem... Do the people here think it could work? I've read about the T400/T500/W500 quad core mod and I know support from libreboot was a problem at some point so I wonder if I'd have to do that work myself and if it's possible.

One last thing.I've already looked at this thread, and my question is not the same.For anyone wondering.

AFAIK there wasn't an X60 model with a T7600, so you'll have to look elsewhere for a T7600 BGA.

But, more importantly, such a build will be beset by temperature issues, as the X60 T7200 (the fastest X60 AFAIK) already suffers from it. From personal experience, even the X60 T5600 (1.83GHz) overheats badly when not undervolted.

Thank you for your response.I think I wasn't so clear in my post.I'm not looking for an x60 that comes with a t7600.I am trying to figure out if it is possible to use a t7600 in the x60 after reflow work.I have a T2500 (2.0 GHz) after upgrading the fan + heatsink and using some decent thermal paste and a pad I've been able to keep the temperature low, though I have considered how this may be a problem since I once used a t5600 and had thermal issues as well, but with my current setup I think it should be fine.Putting the fan into disengaged mode is always an option.The sound doesn't bother me that much.

According to CPU-World, the T2500 has a max power dissipation of 44.2 watts, while the T7600 is 53.3 watts.

That's a difference of 9 watts. I'm not dissuading you though. If you manage to solder that T7600, great! If it doesn't overheat, even better!! Though you may need one or more of the ff:

* X61 heatsink (42X3805) with single large heatpipe
* liquid metal paste
* CPU undervolting

I've never payed attention to power dissipation :oops: I hope it won't become an issue if I go through with it.

The power circuitry should be able to handle it.

"Power dissipation" in this context means heat output. It's probably the reason Lenovo didn't put a T7600 (or even a T7400 for that matter) in the X60-- it runs too hot.

Oh! good news maybe. The T7200 and the T7600 have the same power dissipation. This makes things seem more within reach.
