x61 fan level/speed

#1 Post by Hifumin » Wed Oct 16, 2019 7:57 pm

Hello.

I have an x61 that runs a little hot and the fan is quite noicy so I tried setting up thinkfan to control it, but after not noticing any real changes in neither temp nor noise, I tested the fan and got this results:

level 1 3226 rpm
level 2 3226 rpm
level 3 3856 rpm
level 4 3458 rpm
level 5 3402 rpm
level 6 4085 rpm
level 7 4052 rpm

Is my fan malfunctioning? or is not possible to change its rpm? I thought the idea of changing the fan levels was to reduce the speed and save battery/reduce noise.

Can the fan RPM be altered? To go beyond the fan controls you'll need to reprogram the embedded controller, which isn't easy.

BTW, have you cleaned the heatsink and lubricated the fan?

I thought changing the speed wasn't that difficult because even the thinkfan article in thinkwiki has the speed at which the x61 fan should run depending on the level. That's also the reason why I thought my fan might be malfunctioning, as my speeds are not even similar to those.

I did clean and lubricate it.
