Intel 82566MM NIC driver for X61s running W10x64

#1 Post by dandreye » Sun Oct 20, 2019 7:30 am

Hi All,

Could anyone please advise an optimal Intel 82566MM NIC driver for X61s running W10x64? This is a fresh W10x64 install and I'm getting "device cannot start".
A couple of drivers that I found won't even install: each returns something like "no Intel NICs found, or check the driver is compatible with W10" after I point at the inf file.
Here are the HW IDs:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1049&SUBSYS_20DE17AA&REV_03
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1049&SUBSYS_20DE17AA
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1049&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1049&CC_0200

Many thanks in anticipation.

"Device cannot start" means that there is a driver installed, but it has a problem starting.

I don't think Intel released any Win10 drivers for this old NIC. Probably what you have is the inbox Win10 driver. You can try installing the Vista/Win7 drivers.

dr_st:

Thanks for your reply. Yes the default MS driver is there indeed and it doesn't work (getting "Device cannot start" with it), so I implied installing a better one over it. Among those few I unsuccessfully tried so far (all of them with VEN_8086&DEV_1049 and one even with VEN_8086&DEV_1049&SUBSYS_20DE17AA) was one for Vista. Wondering if anyone's ever managed to make this NIC work at all with W10, perhaps with some tweaks in the inf and/or elsewhere.

Plenty of machines of that generation (T61, X61, X61s) are running Win10, and all are with the same NIC. It should just work with the inbox driver without any tweaks.

Have you ever got this NIC to work with any other OS on this laptop?

Try connecting a live cable to the port (one that's also connected to a switch / another PC at the other side) and rebooting the OS.

I briefly had an earlier W10x64 version on it in the past (10240) but can't remember anything wrt the NIC as I never used wired networking during that time. An X60s in my household running W8.1x32 has what looks like a somewhat older NIC (82573L, VEN_8086&DEV_109A&SUBSYS_207E17AA), which runs perfectly fine on inbox W8.1 driver: can't see any signs of manually installing a LAN driver on it.

Update: No idea what happened but after a couple of reboots during various Windows update installation I can now see it up and running with MS driver version 9.13.41.3 dated 29.09.2011, driver file e1e6032e.sys. I should've taken a record of the previous driver version to see if it has changed.
