x60s worth update with x61 t8100 mobo?

#1 Post by kaninfrans » Thu Apr 23, 2020 2:33 pm

I really miss my old x60s, but compared to the modern world, its just too slow. So I'm considering to try to upgrade it with a x61 motherboard, max the ram and install an SSD. An SXGA+ screen would be nice too, but I really don't think I'm able to find one, so that is not so important as of now.

I have been searching for t9300 and t8300 versions, but no luck. However, I did find a CPU Core 2 Duo T8100 FRU: 43Y9000 mobo, which AFAIK should work.

But is it really worth the time and money, or should I just forget about it?

The main problem is that the heatsink on the X60s is designed for a low voltage CPU with 17 watt TDP, while the T8100 has a TDP of 35 watts. It will overheat badly.
