8GB of Ram on a X61 7673Y1H

#1 Post by leaq » Sat Sep 19, 2020 7:53 am

Hello, I recently got a ThinkPad X61 with middleton's bios and I want to upgrade it to 8GB of Ram. However upon looking at the ThinkWiki my model number 7673-CTO (and 7673Y1H) wasn't on there. Has anyone tried putting 8GB in this model?
Has there been any anomalies after the 8GB upgrade? And most importantly, what brand to buy?

Hi Leaq.

Any X61 will take 8 Gb of DDR-2.

If you want to keep an X61 at least semi-current these days, I would consider it an essential upgrade.

Be forewarned, not nearly as cheap though as the DDR-3 for post-X61 Thinkpads.

The Crucial 8 GB kit comes to mind, if you need a part number I can dig it up.

Regards.

The member RealBlackStuff recently posted saying this about DDR2 sticks for the X61:

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=131322#p849933
RAM: avoid any so-called "Value-RAM".
DDR2-6400/PC2-800 SO-DIMMs run slightly cooler than DDR2-5300/PC2-667.
Preferably get 2Rx8 sticks (printed on them somewhere).
Get a matching pair from Hynix, Micron, Samsung, Elpida, Axiom, etc.
Z61p x3 (C2D T7600, 3GB, 500GB SSD, BCM70015, Advanced Dock x1, Mini Dock x2)
W520 (C2Q i7-2720QM, 8GB, 60GB SSD)
X61 (C2D T7500, 3GB, 250GB SSD, BCM70015)
X61s (2GB, 120GB SSD)
T43p (P M 760, 2GB, IBM Port Replicator II, 128GB SSD)
G41 (P4 3.46GHz, 2GB, 128GB SSD)
