Is x60s using 2.5 inch hard drive or 1.8 inch?

It's said that X60 is using 2.5 inch hard drivers and X60S is using 1.8. Is that true? It's also said only Japan X60s is using 1.8 driver while US adopts 2.5.

The US lenovo site says:

X60S 17044JU
Hard drive
Hard disk size (GB)[4] 60 GB
Interface type Serial ATA
Hard drive speed (RPM) 5400

without saysing 2.5 or 1.8 inch.

I will not choose x60s if 1.8, TOO SLOW. Any idea? thanks

What difference to you if it's 2.5" or 1.8" if it's the same speed? You think that a 2.5" drive is going to be magically faster than a 1.8" with the same rotational speed?

The thing is _all_ available 1.8" drives on the X4x series are 4200RPM. That what makes them slow.

The X60s uses 5400RPM drives, which are 2.5".

Why wouldn't that be the case? If the density and the rotational speed of two disks are the same, the number of bytes that can be read increases from the middle of a disk to the outer edge - it's simple math. Some people partition their disks in a way which places the partitions which should be fastest (swap, OS) on the outer edge of a disk.

All other parameters equal, a desktop 3.5" drive should be faster than a notebook 2.5" at the same RPM for the reason odysseus mentioned.

So yes, we do care about diameter for performance reason.

AFAIK for the US and european market the X60 and X60s use 2,5" hdds, but I can't tell you how it is actually handled for the asian market.

And yes, of course 2,5" notebook hdds are faster and also offer much better throughputs than the smaller 1,8" notebook hdds, that's assured.

Based on those specifications, they HAVE TO BE 2.5", because 1.8" drives are not currently made any faster than 4200rpm by any hard drive manufacturer.

Correct. Japanese market is offering:
30GB 4200rpm(1.8インチ)/40GB 5400rpm(2.5インチ)/80GB 5400rpm(2.5インチ)
1.8" model is only 1.16kg (2.55 lbs).

I think you are agreeing with me but, to further clarify...
AFAIK, for US Market Lenovo only uses Hitachi drives, and Hitachi does not make 5400rpm 1.8" drives, nor does any current HDD manufacturer. So, the published spec could not be achieved without using 2.5" drives in both US models. If the X60s were to ship with a 1.8" 4200rpm drive, I would refuse it, since the 1.8" drives were the "deal killer" on the X40/41 and X41T for me.

Same here... Loved the form factor of my X40 ... but the harddisk ... ugh..

That’s why I now use a heavier X31...
(With a 7200rpm harddisk)

They *can* make higher RPM 1.8" HDDs; the only trouble is, there isn't enough of an industry "push" to do so. The iPods that use the Toshiba 1.8" HDDs are perfectly happy with the setup, yet it could get a bit slow for an X Series Thinkpad. Maybe Lenovo thought the same thing and boosted it to a 2.5" HDD; logical to do since there isn't too much of an incentive to get the 1.8" RPMs higher.

Also, there is another thread here (about 2 down from this one) that states the X60s comes with the option of having either the 1.8" HDD or the 2.5" HDD. See; http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=19005

HTH :)

In Japan, yes.
In USA, 2.5" 5400rpm only.

I've heard this but don't quite know how to accomplish it with PerfectDisk, my defragmenter of choice, though for all I know maybe PerfectDisk does this automatically. When the display shows up it's always packing stuff at the top part of the display, but I don't whether that's standing for the inside or outside of the disk.

I wonder if there any 1.8" hard drive will become 5400 rpm
I believe the next step for notebook hard disk is toward higher density
like seagate 5400.3

It seems unlikely, although possible. The 1.8" drives were initially designed for iPod and other MP3 players, where 4200rpm is perfectly adequate. They were later used in notebooks. I think we will see higher capacity flash drives first, although they may not interface with current notebooks.

I know the new X60 uses 2.5" drives but they are SATA drives, if I'm not mistaken. Will an 'older' non-SATA drive work. I doubt it but I wanted to ask.

No, not without a PATA to SATA converter anyhow, and unlikely then.

hum, so no swapping of an X31 HD then !
