Do you mean that Lenovo currently sells X60/X60s with "heavy" batteries on purpose? I've been wondering why most models found in tabook.pdf include the high capacity 8-cell battery (40Y7003), only a few include the enhanced capacity 4-cell battery (40Y7001) and none include the slim line 4-cell battery (40Y6999), which should be the lightest of all.

I ordered a slim battery (40Y6999) for my x60s last week. I will report back if I feel there is any reason why Lenovo went with the bulkier battery for most of the x60 models.

currently, my battery is being held at customs...

When did batteries became food and/or durg?

I was under the impression that the X60 did have an optical out. I haven't found any verification, but the startup folder contains something called "digital audio detector" or something like that.

What is the manufacturer of the 100GB drive found in the X60?
Lenovo is using Toshiba drives in the current generation. IBM always used Hitachi because they sold their hard drive division to them and probably had a working arrangement for parts.

Wait, weren't some, if not a good majority of the drives in the X4X Series, made by Toshiba?

Digital line detector is not the digital output you want.
This is for the detection of the digital line (ISDN) because the builtin modem is analog and cannot use the digital line.

The lightest X60s listed on lenovo.com is 3.0 lbs, quite a bit heavier than the 2.75-lb X40. The 2.69-lb X60s that Lenovo promised is not yet available in the States.

If you buy the x60s now with the 'slim' battery (4-cell prismatic), it will be 2.7-2.8 lbs, the lightest weight possible. However, the 3.0 lbs that you see on the internet is the 'standard' battery (4-cell cylindracil) or the 8-cell cylindracil that gives the x60s a weight of about 3.2 lbs. All depends on the battery, that is the weight factor, but I believe the HD options might also be the cause of the increase in weight (cannot order something less than 60GB, though I am not sure how much a 40GB HD compares weight wise).

The only thing you cannot order currently with the x60s is the L2300 processor (which is slower than the L2400 just a tad) and I believe the UXGA screen (?). Weight wise I think those do not play a major factor.

Lenovo is offering us the lightest. It all depends on what options you choose, which for now is the battery (something luckily that is changeable after purchase as well)

Well, at least they give us the option of ordering it with the slim. I'm sure they have their reasons. I have no idea what the performance between a 4-cell prismatic vs. a 4-cell cylindracil battery is. The former is lighter though for sure.

I dont see why somebody wants to order the lightest battery!
It is not smaller than the normal, there is only a weight and capacity difference.

The slim battery is 0.2kg. 2.0Ah
The extended is 0.26kg. 2.6Ah
The 8cell battery is 0.48kg. 5.2Ah

I dont see how somebody able to buy a smaller battery for 60 gramms of weight saving!!!!

My X60 is below 1.6kg with the 8 cell battery, and below 1.4kg with the extended 4 cell battery.

I think the 8 cell battery has the better capacity/weigt index.....

i'm most likely going with what lenovo has as standard (the 4-cell cylandrical).

You are right about the small weight difference, it really is not that big of a deal. My point was the lightest x60s is on the US market but you have to customize it with lighter items to get it the lightest (which in the end will not be a big difference in comparison with a 3 lbs x60s standard).

UXGA ??? On a 12" ?
Maybe SXGA, but UXGA? No way :) (not that I dont want it, but afaik there are no 12" UXGA screens)

The difference between the slim and the standard batteries is only 0.06 kg or 0.13 lbs. The lightest X60s listed on lenovo.com is 3.0 lbs with standard battery, so switching to the slim version would make it 2.87 lbs, which is still 0.18 lbs heavier than the 2.69-lb model that Lenovo said would be available.

I finally got my 4 cell slim battery. I got the slim cell because of the fact that it's flush fit and doesn't have the bumps on the bottom. I know the standard battery is only slightly heavier but I ordered the x60s instead of the x60 mainly for the size, so I want my thinkpad to look nice and thin. If I need the extra battery life, I always have the 8 cell as backup.

For the X20, the XGA models have much thicker display lids than the SVGA models, making the former about 0.3 lbs heavier. So, an X60s with a UXGA screen will most likely weigh more than the currently available ones.

Oops. I should not have put UXGA. I meant the U as Ultralight not Ultra Extended GA. Sorry. Regardless of the U meaning Ultralight, the X60s with the Ultralight XGA is heavier  according to lenovo's literature:

Travel weight
12.1" XGA:
1.22kg/2.69 lb (4-cell prismatic)
1.27kg/2.80 lb (4-cell cylindrical)
1.48kg/3.26 lb (8-cell cylindrical)

12.1" UltraLight XGA:
1.31kg/2.89 lb (4-cell prismatic)
1.36kg/3.00 lb (4-cell cylindrical)
1.57kg/3.46 lb (8-cell cylindrical)

Pianowizard is correct, we are missing the other machine types. However, if you call them they can find one for you. I know the L2300 processor ($300 cheaper than L2400) is not online to order, but when I called they had a couple available. When I call them next week to order mine I will ask about the 'others'. :?

Can you compare the Ultralight screen to a normal screen?

And / or post pictures here.

Because I would really like to see the change in brightnes :)

The downside of UltraLight screen is absence of internal bluetooth.

I bought both an X60 and X60s. I ended up keeping the X60s (sold the X60) because of the Ultralight screen. I personally found it alot brighter, the whites are so white it starts to hurt the eyes.

But beware, the X60 screen has what it seems a harder backing, (meaning less flexing) screen than the Ultralight. Both are hard enough that you can't push enough to distort display. It just seems to be a different material inside.

The Ultralight though is really light compared to the X60 I had (3.1lbs).

Well, that is sad. Anyway it could be add on later (with e.g., a CDC bluetooth/modem chip?) or something else that makes it better intergrated in the notebook. i hate usb dongles and pc-cards bt.

1702-94U is the only Ultralight model, right? I don't see this online. How did you order yours? Call them up and beg? I got a different 1702, but I still have my 30 days to return it if I can snap up a 94U!

Thanks for posting the pics. I think the straight XGA screen would be fine for my needs if I ever decide to get an X60, and would save a slight amount of weight. Dunno. Have never really played with a U-XGA screen before so I might change my mind...

If you are student/teacher then you can get one in Switzerland at a stupid price but not in stock.

MOD EDIT: Just to nip things in the bud, please be sure not to go into any detail regarding the Educational Pricing, per forum rules.

EDIT: OK, won't do it again, promise

I know we cannot discuss in detail educational pricing, but many institutions do not have any deals still with the X60/s. However, you can still get a 'student' discount if you ask the sales rep. They gave me one on my 1702-94U
