So few comments here.

Indeed. In fact, I confess to having spent a lot more time here BEFORE I got my new X60s (17044DU) -- since then I've been spending most of my free time using it!

So let me also say: It's a terrific machine, by FAR the best of my previous X31, X40, and X41. How? Most of all speed, the dual core is very obvious improvement. Bigger and FASTER hard drive. Perfectly good keyboard -- as good as any X I've owned, plus improvements now in layout, audio switches, "hard" switch for wireless -- and big improvements in the various THinkpad utilities that are bundled. Plus it has greater memory capacity -- eventually up to 4gb (seen by the system as 3GB or so) -- as opposed the 1.5GB limit in my X41.

Other than an overwarm palm rest when it's recharging, there is nothing I don't love about this machine.

And oh, I forgot -- 6-7 hours of battery life on the eight-cell!

Me too! I have been using My 17044JU all day long.
It has been already upgraded original 60GB/5400rpm Harddrive with new Seagate 100GB/7200rpm .
X60s's performance is amazing! Almost 70%~ 80% upper than previous X41(1.5GHz) in benchmark.
I didn't feel any thermal issue so far.Fan is very quiet.
But I have not tried writing of optional Double Layer super multi drive purchased in web.

I'm also lurking rather than posting, for two reasons: I'm still waiting for my X60 to arrive, and there is such good information about the X60 available, there isn't much need to post queries.

I was debating between a Sony sz series and an X60, and despite the better theoretical specs of the sz (higher resolution screen, adequate 3d card, built in optical drive, all for a similar weight) the X60 won in the end - both because of the Thinkpad's much better reputation, and the dramatically better info available. I'm planning to mainly run Linux, and sites like thinkwiki.org make life much much easier.

The area to the right of the mouse buttons gets very warm when the AC is plugged in and the battery is charging...

i'm lurking around here as well and waiting for my university to offer it (at a nice discount) before i buy it.....still waiting!

Did you really get 6 hours from the battery? This is my biggest contention with leaving my X40 and upgrading. I want to make sure the battery life will be at least the same. The energy consumed by the larger hdd's is more.

It really depends on what you're doing with it.
You really need to turn down the screen to save battery life.

I would not want to have to put my life on the battery lasting six hours; and if I did I would be turning off a lot of things (wireless, etc) and turning the screen down.

I make a point of having chargers close by; one is left in my office, one is left at my home, one is left in my car (AC/DC), one is left in my laptop bag.

Everyone here who owns an X60 or X60s seems to be in love with it, but I am not interested in getting one because it's quite a bit heavier (3.0 - 4.13 lbs) than the X40 that I already own. Hopefully, by the time the warranty for my X40 expires in late 2008, there will be an X-series Thinkpad that's lighter than the X40.

Mine just shipped today, so I'll have something to post about it in a few days

It would be worth the .25lbs to me to upgrade from a 1.2GHz X40 to an X60s to have a substantially faster hdd. However, I do not want to trade any battery life. Currently I get about six hours out of the extended battery using it about 75% of the time with the screen at brightest and the wireless on. In fact this is partly the reason I have been considering going down to a X32.

Are the duo core CPUs lower voltage than the P-M in the X41? And do the X60 extended life battery fit the X40/41s?

For an ultraportable and my usage pattern, I wouldn't benefit from a faster hard drive. My CPU is mostly idle, so I definitely would not benefit from upgrading to an X60.

I chose the X41 mainly for it's size and weight. Going to X60 would be a step backward.

The X40 is slightly lighter than the X41.

glad i see i'm not the only x40 user having doubts to update or not to x60, i was very very close to do it, till i realise that the x40 doking wont work in x60 (in switzerland you have to get them separately) and the most important the batteries (i have 2 X 4 cell and a 8 cell- which mostly i had around 16hrs all of them)....

so, new docking, new batteries, even heavier (some says though the website says x60s is lighter and thinner- doubtly)...as pianowizard said, i hope by 2008 when my warranty expires too to have better options than now.

My experience, and that of several posters, is that the hard drive on the x40 clicks a lot. I've read that it's a result of the heads "reparking" themselves or something like that.

Does the hard drive on the X60 make an audible clicking sound like the x40 does?

My X40 has the same clicking "problem" and it may be the only thing that I don't like about this otherwise perfect machine.

No clicking at all from the X60... I have the 100GB disc and its completely silent and clickless... no constant access unless one of the background programs is running... they really did get it right this time

This is a no-brainer machine for those considering it... its a very well designed and executed compact machine... small and light, well balanced, well designed and built, sturdy, silent, relatively cool running, dependable and functional... what else do you want?

I think I will say that is the only other port I could want on a Thinkpad, but I will draw the line at putting in a digital audio port; that should probably stay on the docking station.

Count me in this group as well. My X40's warranty is up in July of 2007. Am waiting to see what the X61 (?) will look like. For me, weight is the critical fact. Granted, doesn't sound like a huge difference between the 60 and 40 in terms of weight...

At present, the lightest X-series notebook available on lenovo.com is an X40, which is 2.7 - 2.78 lbs. My guess is that this is to encourage people to buy the X40, and when it's sold out, Lenovo will then start selling the lightest X60s models, which should be as light as 2.69 lbs.

You could buy the lightest since Feb. The X60s is on there, just need to click on 'view all models' in the x-series section.

The lightest X60s listed on lenovo.com is 3.0 lbs, quite a bit heavier than the 2.75-lb X40. The 2.69-lb X60s that Lenovo promised is not yet available in the States.

Isn't the HDD clicking a "feature" found in Hitachi drives, that can be attenuated with AAM (automatic acoustic management)?
