Is it just me ? or the palm rest is really getting too hot.. ! even when on battery !

It's very hot for me, and the my wireless card will stop working if overheat

with the X60 or X60s?

allot of bad news since lenovo took over... first the motherboard problem, then the motherboard desing fix problem.

and now overheating

Not even "hot" more like luke-warm. I leave it on 24/7 and it stays the same temperature. No overheading, no problems.

I don't think it's a problem. It's warm enough for me to notice, but not uncomfortable.

Mine is an X60, overall i am very happy, but the palm rest is getting uncomfortably warm ! to the extent.. that i am now using my left hand.. for managing the navigation.. !

I would call it warm rather than hot. Of course I wish it could be as cool as the left palm rest.

Mine also gets uncomfortably warm on right palm rest when using WiFi. I've called tech support and they haven't heard any similar complaints. I'm returning mine and getting T60 instead.

LOL, you're returning the unit for a much bigger one just because the palm rest is warm?

I previously owned T40 and I wanted to get something different, so I went for x60. I love the small size factor and long battery life, but I was still debating whether I should've gotten T60. But that warm plam rest is really driving me nuts. After about 30 min, it gets quite uncomfortable and I never had that issue with T40.

Frankly i love my X60 too... after upgrading it to 2 gb ram, i can do intense processing, still keeping a very light laptop to move around with ..

but..... this palm rest getting really difficult to work with after a while.. i will wait and see for a few more days... if it stays this hot.. i cant use it ! will have to take some action...

but when wireless is on i think the left palm rest is to warm and make me uncomfortable.

I've started to understand that perhaps it is not that unusual in today's laptops to be a bit warm. My previous machine had.. ahem.. a couple of years on it's neck (old Latitude Celeron 500 MHz).

On the other hand, I fail to understand how they can ship a machine which runs this "hot" in such a delicate area as this is.

I'm contemplating getting myself some sort of kevlar protection for my palm, if this thing doesn't resolve itself somehow. I really wouldn't want to return the unit as I find the machine to be gorgeous otherwise.

mine is 1702-4ET. it came with intel PRO/wireless3945BG.
i just noticed that with wireless off. sometimes it makes me uncomfortable too when HD is being used a lot such as doing virus scan.

Yes, I agree model number is so important for the person that chooses to respond to your request for help. Especially since ThinkPads come in so many "flavors".

Regarding this particular issue of heat, my X60s is just barely warm. I am using my X60s to write this and I've been using my wireless connection for nearly 4 hours now. I do alot of work on the web and I'm really happy that I do not have a heat issue with mine. On a scale of 1-10 being the hotest, I would rate mine a 1.

My x60s is warm when not charging. But when charging, the right palm rest gets extremely hot, so is my AC Adapter.

I've used the adapter in US (110v) and now in China (220v), and they are both burning hot, after only 1 min of charging.

I'm really afraid the heat will damage the computer.

Rather than just a moan poll why doesn't everyone post their machine types as well as what way they voted and maybe a more obvious pattern to the heat will occur

I've still not seen one where the APS sensor was much above 50 degrees so external temp would be lower than this so not really too hot by any standards

Mine gets too hot when downloading for a while (like 13GB from torrents). This should not be done anyway on a notebook, but I sold my desktop and still have not made a new one and I need my tv shows.


Casual wireless on battery, the temp is really low and not really there.

Casual wireless on ac, the temp is noticable and does not bother me.

The two IBM Certified X60s models I returned both got uncomfortably warm on AC power. The hottest one was 170469U which has the Verizon WWAN, Atheros card and bluetooth. The 17023QU wasn't quite as hot with no WWAN and Intel Wifi.

The openbox 17043DU I picked up on Ebay is quite a bit cooler. Gets warm but not hot on AC. This model is Intel Wifi, no bluetooth, no WWAN and no fingerprint reader.

I would like to ask why it should not be done on a notebook. Logically there is no reason. Leaving your laptop running with the monitor turned off is no different than doing the same with your desktop - unless you have a really really bad notebook with a grasshopper flapping it's wings in place of a heatsync (Also reffered to as the Dell CPi by laptop boffins)
